2. The couple trying to take a photo with a wave 🌊 reminded me of an incident that happened when I was around 10 years old. I grew up holidaying on a tiny deserted coral cay Island on the Barrier Reef 🏝️ For those who have never seen this type of tropical paradise: the island itself sits in the centre of a "shelf" of coral & at the edge it suddenly drops into deeper water. During low tide the shelf is exposed & you can go reef walking, snorkel in the coral gardens or snorkel/ swim/ spearfish off the edge of the shelf etc. This one particular day, my friend & I had been mucking around on the island, completely oblivious to the tides & suddenly decided we were gonna walk out to the edge of the shelf; without shoes 🙄 & go swimming. We thought the tide was going out. Even tho we kept cutting the crap out of our feet, we continued on – cos the campsites were all the way on the other side of the island & we couldn't be arsed turning back. By the time we reached the edge of the shelf, & stopped focusing on our feet, we finally started to notice that the water was actually getting DEEPER, not shallower. & that we were in a spot of trouble. We were a fair distance out from the island, no one knew where we were, we had no shoes or snorkeling gear, our feet were bleeding & it was feeding time for the Sharks 🦈 So when the tide comes up, Sharks will scavenge along the shelf looking for any fish that got caught when the tide went out. We would even leave carcasses of our catch out there just to watch the Sharks fight & feed. Mostly they were just white tip & black tip reef sharks – pretty harmless, or even a whaler or two. But sometimes a hammerhead would be spotted. Tiger sharks are pretty common around the islands too, altho we'd never actually spotted one on the shelf. The water was almost waist deep by the time we started heading back cos it actually took us a little while to admit that the water was rising, despite how obvious it was. We had stood there debating the water levels for a while, almost like we were trying to convince ourselves that it wasn't getting rapidly deeper cos if we did then we would have to accept our predicament. In the end we just agreed we were cold & SWAM back in denial 😆 tho our panic rose the closer to shore we got. We only ran into a few little black tips, so nothing bad actually happened. But we were scared sh*tless & I'll never forget that feeling of standing out on the edge of the shelf, looking back at the island, so close yet so far away while the rising water lapped closer & closer to my waist. A few years earlier my friends older brother & his friend made a similar mistake when they were out spearfishing & they were stalked by a hammerhead. They got trapped & had to be picked up by dinghy. So THAT was also on our minds. Anyway we never went out without proper gear again & always let our parents know when we went. Watching that couple brought back those memories & I just thought I'd share that little adventure 😊👍
