4:30 in the morning is asking for trouble, he could've thought that they were intruders breaking in, or he could've been high on some drugs, whatever the case may be the cops should've handled a traffic citation differently than coming to someone house that early in the morning, sad situation but it could've been avoided
Honestly, if the mother didn't want her son to be killed then why did she bring officers to his house and even open the door for them. JSO said no violent crime was committed and if they wanted to get inside his house the mother should have told them to obtained a warrant. If the guy didn't shoot at the cops, whatever they found in there wouldn't matter since the search was illegal. People need to reread the 4th amendment.
