This GULL got completely tangled in fishing line! - Animal rescue
Spread The Viralist

One of our last rescues in 2020 was caused by something we have seen a huge rise in this year – discarded litter!

This black-headed gull was found tangled in fishing line and could barely move. Lawrie and Simon quickly rushed to the scene but the poor bird was barely moving when they arrived.

Tangled in more than 20m of line, it took a lot of work to get her free but, amazingly, she was not badly injured and could be sent back to the wild!

Huge thanks to Louis from the RSPCA for the release footage!

  1. Hi guys! Just a little update to this rescue… one of our volunteers has since been back to the lake and has removed all traces of line (and the poor magpie) from the bushes. We will keep an eye out but, hopefully, that should stop this happening again.

  2. Is it safe to cut the line from bird legs? Or could the wound get infected? At my local pond, I’ve seen geese with fishing line tied around their legs. I want to cut the line off because it hurts them, and they could lose the leg. Is it safe for the bird though?

  3. People leave so much "gear" behind because they are too lazy to clean up after themselves. Sailing here we had a tow rope wrapped around our propeller, limped into the closet place to get it removed by a local diver.

  4. That is disgusting that these poor die because of thoughtless lazy people. There should be fines that would sting a persons wallet for leaving fishing line behind. We rescued a seagull here in Nova Scotia years ago caught in fishing line in the ocean just off shore. We noticed the gull sitting in the same spot for hours and realized it was in trouble. My husband and a friend went out in a boat and caught him. He was a big gull. He went to a bird sanctuary for rehab and then was released. Happy ending.

  5. An the gull,s story to it's mates, hay guys,I went to this 4star hotel, after some people saved me from death an they laveshed me with care an food, then brought me back to tell all my buddies PS thanks.🥰💮🌸

  6. This is why I hate irresponsible fishermen and women. (Which most of them are in this respect.) They lose the line and just leave it there and don't give a toss about the natural environment and how many animals will be hurt. And it's not as though they need to fish anyway with a whole kitchen and pantry full of food and several supermarkets and convenience stores nearby. It's ridiculous and should not be allowed.

  7. Laurie is so much like Simon. Poor birds can't even see the fishing line .
Humans need to be better than that. Dearly love this show and am grateful we get to see it.

  8. Birds of all kinds are my favorite animal so I'm especially pleased to see this fella had a happy ending! Even though the poor Magpie couldn't be saved, I take heart knowing that people like you are working hard to prevent such tragic events. Sometimes all it takes is a small change to have a big impact and I hope that encourages more people to take action.

  9. Poor magpie!😭 Thank you for saving the gull, she was really lucky!❤🐦 And for clearing the area from the fishing lines!👍 ATM there's a female pigeon with tangled feet coming to my window – she's very alert, even the EkoPatrol didn't manage to catch her in the park… One of her toes is already dead😥 One moment of human carelessness may mean agony for an animal😢
