Hyenas are not specialist hunters like big cats, they either take the easy route and steal someone else's kill, or when they do manage to kill, it's not pretty. Their jaws are immensely powerful, but their teeth are not designed for the 'death grip' that big cats use (by clamping the victims throat shut with their huge canines and effectively, suffocating it) hyenas get some of the troupe to attack the front of the animal, clamping down on it's forequarters with a vice like grip, then the others who are behind immediately go for the most vulnerable areas (stomach, genitals, anus) and start ripping a convenient hole in the animals flesh, and it's usually alive as they start feasting on it's insides…
