It is quite amazing that an eagle on the wing can swoop and grab a 20 pound prey, and carry it off. It is easier to swoop on the fly and grab an object than to attempt to fly off from a stopped, standing position for the eagle! It depends on the kind of raptor, it's wing-span and its age. But it does happen, fairly often in Africa, where they commonly snatch a fairly large prey off the ground, sometimes weighing up to 30 pounds.
I hope the people who tempt death just for shits and giggles, at least have a donor card filled out. Some people actually want to live, but got dealt a bad hand.
