Plastic surgeon Tomasz Kosowski is representing himself in a Florida death penalty trial, and he’s chosen a judge rather than a jury to decide his case. He’s pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Largo attorney Steven Cozzi, who disappeared in March 2023 and whose body hasn’t been found. On the first day of trial, prosecutors outlined their case and called witnesses, while Kosowski declined to give an opening statement. His decision to act as his own attorney—a pro se defense—puts objections, cross-examination and legal arguments in his hands. He’s also waived a jury for any penalty phase. Has he just given up?
