The Speculative Evolution of Project Hail Mary

The Speculative Evolution of Project Hail Mary
Spread The Viralist

Project Hail Mary, a story by Andy Weir (author of The Martian), features some of the most creative speculative evolution scenarios in modern science fiction. With the release of the film adaptation starring Ryan Gosling, now seemed like a great time to explore the speculative biology of the aliens in this story: the Astrophage and the Eridians (Rocky’s species).

  1. the premise of this creature in Andy's notes must read something like "gut microbiome is the center of the alien, the brain is crystal fiberoptics, the microbes build the brain/computer and the steam powered omnidirectional spider rocky rust skinned robot.

  2. Their biology still kinda doesn't explain how they get so much energy to maintain their bodies, as well as why do they have mitochondria if there is very little oxygen on the surface. Also why do they have plant like cell lineages if there is no light on the surface?

  3. I’m not understanding how the Eridanians are said not to have any knowledge of electromagnetism, but essentially have fiber-optic nervous systems and brains.
Not being able to sense a force doesn’t mean that you can’t find out that it exists, and wouldn’t a race capable of making a starship powered by radiation-eating critters have figured out what electromagnetism is in the process?

  4. Isn’t all animals bodies made up of single cells that are pretty much worker cells and then we have warrior cells that defend the “hive” and such and then our brain is just the computer that moves the hive that the colony of cells make up

  5. That's not a Sci-Fi, but a Space Opera. Biology and Physics here are as unrealistic as midichlorians and the force from the Star Wars.

  6. You did a pretty good hypothetical analysis of their evolution based on a hypothetical evolution of an alien that is hypothetical but geez yeah I mean smart people I wish I was smart like that trying to create a whole new evolutionary race in my head like that and then for you to have a high pathetical analysis of how they evolved crazy

  7. They should make a movie on arid where it shows how they evolved and how they developed their space technology and how they discovered the Petrova line and just life in general on arid I'm sure people would watch that or maybe a mini series would be interesting

  8. I love the creativity of the eridian boilogy. It seems a lot like a grab bag of ideas that don't all make sense together but are super fucking cool regardless.

  9. Lol, the brains work with light, but they cannot see light and they don't know what light/radiation is… Riiighhhttt

Anyone saying this is accurate Syfy must just be parroting another idiot or just low IQ

And I thought the movie too much jokey for the kind of trouble they were facing. I thought it was made for kids, only after I discovered it was a book.

People just consume garbage nowadays and think it is good.

  10. You can go anywhere (within the causal horizon) but you can also go anywhen(!) in the future. As you accelerate the time dilation has you pass millennia in your original reference frame.

In one book they mentioned a group of sentient beings who've chosen to accelerate to get to the end of the universe. I think that's pretty neat.

  11. The Eridian biology seems so crazy and insane to us, but I can imagine them being amazed at human Biology too. "Wait what?? Human brains are made completely of a delicate flesh and use electricity to form thoughts and memories??" Wait, the Eridians would probably say it like, "BRRRWEROPP EERRINGRAAIIG EOOORIPBEEPDOOP??"
