In 1986, a deadly natural disaster occurred at Lake Nyos in Cameroon. A rare phenomenon called a limnic eruption suddenly released a massive cloud of carbon dioxide gas (CO₂) from the lake. The invisible gas spread through nearby villages while people were sleeping, causing suffocation and the death of around 1,700 people and thousands of animals within minutes.
