A way to think of Alzheimer's is that dementia is a symptoms of Alzheimer's'. Dementia can be caused be many things, drugs, alcohol, metabolic disorders, brain atrophy etc. I work with dementia every day. I'm a registered nurse. NO there wouldn't necessarily be signs of dementia every day. People can be so cognitively aware, seemingly like you or me, but their ability to make safe and appropriate decision is SO impaired. They don't recognize safety issues, they don't recognize what repercussions of their actions may be. Wendy may be cognitively intact, but she may also not be. Like Dan said, it waxes and wanes. She may be OK in the morning and completely confused by 5pm in the evening. Graves Disease causes imbalances of hormones that can in turn cause forms of dementia, confusion and forgetfulness. Keeping her in a locked facility may be what is keeping her safe. The fact that people can't call her and she is in a place that she is uncomfortable is NOT OK. It sad that she is in this position.
