Commodore 64 Compilation Comparison: The 4th Dimension (1990)
Spread The Viralist

The Commodore 64 Compilation Comparison is my series in which I review game compilations that were released for the Commodore 64.

In this video I’m reviewing The 4th Dimension, a compilation of 4 games released by Hewson in 1990. The games included are:

Cyberdyne Warrior
Insects in Space
Head the Ball
Mission Impossibubble

  1. Great review! Cyberdyne Warrior and Insects in Space definitely my choices. Head the ball seemed weakest. Quite like the presentation of Impossibubble but looks like it gets quite boring quickly.

  2. Meh, compared to the Thalamus pack, this feels like a PD frenzy. There is nothing here I would play more than a few times. Cyberdyne Warrior sounds very much like Cyberdyne systems, and looks similar to Antirad, but despite the Rolands charm, it the best of an average bunch. Cant wait for your review to Top Gun in the Hollywood Pack. 🙂

  3. Amstrad owners got the short end of the stick with this one: all four games were previous Rack-It budget releases on the C64, and two of them (Anarchy and Battle Valley) were also Rack-It releases on the Amstrad, so they didn't get the four exclusives like we did on the C64.
Cyberdyne Warrior is for me the best of the four releases, once you learn the way to earn credits and use the droids, the game opens up, and level two is particularly gorgeous to look at. Insects in Space is a weird take on a classic from Sensible, complete with Martin Galway theme, and Mission Impossibubble is a shooting collect-em-up, with nice Bounder homage on level two, even with the same grid style. Head the Ball can get difficult quickly, and maybe needed a tweak in the playability stakes.
If all four of these had Rack-It releases instead, that may have been a better way to release them individually rather than a compilation, but nonetheless it's solid stuff here. Well worth checking out but the magazine reviews maybe were a little too generous.

  4. Cyberdyne Warrior was better than most full price releases, Retrograde was an unoffical sequel, I predict The Hits 2 topping this list of compilations and either System 3's one or Ocean's, The In Crowd fighting for 2nd

  5. I do agree with the mags that Head the ball is the worse one here. I had Insects in Space but i don't recall playing it very much it was part of the big box 30 collection so got a bit lost in the mix. Mission Impossibubble looks great.

  6. That cover art work on Hewson's game
    compilation box looks so awesome,
it even reminds me of the old comic book magazine, HEAVY METAL 😺👍.

I still have Hewson's CHRISTMAS COLLECTION as a tape version
    for my Commodore 64.
