how does a piece of land falling into the ocean create that much of a wave current? surely if falls it falls with little force in relation to the size of the ocean? I don't care how big it is. With the Italian one I kind of get because the peace of the mountain fell into a reservoir that was small in comparison. Rest of this sounds like guess work

Large waves are always fronted by smaller ones, the water starts to rise to a couple meters in front any size of giant wave especially once its already reached land. This is why people can survive them, they get carried in front of its full height. The only thing that could kill you is debrid or being smashed into buildings trees or rocks if you survive that consider yourself lucky.
