“It’s like fireballs exploding in the air.” Yes, these were the exact words used by BBC to define this fire. The fires that ravaged south-eastern Australia in 2019–2020 caused 33 direct fatalities, more than 400 smoke-related premature deaths, the destruction of more than 3,000 homes, and new records for high severity fire extent and the percentage of area burned for any forest biome worldwide. They were so disastrous that they were known as the “Black Summer bushfires.” The fires, which scorched 5.8 million hectares of Australia’s eastern coast in late 2019 and early 2020, were so severe that dozens of pyro cumulonimbus clouds filled with smoke formed.
