Thousands of people hid in monasteries, pagodas and schools seeking shelter from a powerful storm that hit the coast of Myanmar and southeast Bangladesh on Sunday.
This cyclone could cause sea levels to rise up to 4 meters, which could affect more than 2 million people directly in its path.
When Cyclone Mocha made landfall, it uprooted trees, scattered ramshackle houses in the Rohingya displaced persons camps in Bangladesh and caused a storm surge in low-lying areas.
Myanmar rescue services said two people were killed in a landslide, and local media reported a man died in Myanmar after a tree fell on him.
Winds up to 195 km/h (120 mph), Mocha blew between Cox’s Bazar, home to almost a million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, and Sittwe in Myanmar, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Bureau.
The streets of Sittwe turned into rivers as the worst storm to hit the Bay of Bengal in a decade hit the seaside town.
Al Jazeera’s Tanvir Chowdhury said the main Rohingya refugee camp at Cox’s Bazar was unaffected by the cyclone’s impact. According to Chowdhury, the wind speed was high, “more of a drizzle than a torrential downpour”.
