The government has advised people to avoid non-essential travel and work from home whenever possible to avoid the chaos caused by last winter’s heavy snowfall, for which authorities have been heavily criticized.
A winter storm brought snow to the Greek capital Athens, closing schools, kindergartens and courts and disrupting traffic and power supplies.
The storm, named Barbara by Greek meteorologists, reached Athens yesterday afternoon after sweeping across northern Greece and the islands in the northern Aegean.
Authorities have reopened roads to Athens International Airport, 30 km from the center, and the main artery connecting the city to Lamia in central Greece after being closed for several hours this morning.
The National Civil Protection Service has warned that heavy snowfall is expected in the Attica region around Athens, which is unaccustomed to harsh winters.
About 3,500 people were stuck in their cars on the Athens ring road and more than 200,000 homes and businesses were left without power.
Strong winds and a cold snap in Greece halted ferry and highway traffic, and the Acropolis and other ancient monuments in Athens were covered in snow on Monday.
Inclement weather prompted the authorities in greater Athens to close schools and courthouses and suspend debates in parliament. Mobile phone alerts sent by the authorities to residents of the capital urged the population to stay at home.
The severe weather that has gripped southern Greece will mainly affect areas north of the capital and the nearby island of Evia, the agency said, and is expected to last until Wednesday.
“We strongly advise people to exercise caution and strictly limit movements to those that are absolutely necessary,” said fire department spokesman “Bad weather is very strong.”

Badly designed, defective, public works without sufficient studies or, in many cases, the complete non-existence of infrastructure works (see rain water drainage networks, undergrounding of transmission and distribution lines of electricity, mechanical equipment for maintenance and cleaning of road networks, deficiencies and complete indifference to the existing networks in the sector maintenance-preventive replacement are some of them).
I consider it quite unacceptable the suspension of the operation of the state mechanism simply because 10 cm of snow fell!!! because 100 tons/1000squeare meters of rain fell!!!! because in the summer we have temperatures that sometimes exceed 40 degrees Celsius!!!!
But for thousands of years now, the weather conditions of this country have been, are and will be.
No amount of climate change and other nonsense is capable of justifying the inadequacy of the politicians (see Mayors, Prefects, Regional Governors, Ministers and Prime Ministers) and the services they manage.
All the above are afraid of constructions of voter content (The so-called showcase works) and are completely indifferent to the infrastructure works and the substantial solution of permanent problems of the societies for which they are responsible because the latter do not impress the electorate given that their results will appear in depth for a period longer than that of their political term with the result that they do not contribute votes.
The justification of "Extreme Weather Phenomena" must stop and the competent judicial officials must start assigning responsibility to those in charge, when the normal functioning of the country is interrupted.
Nothing more and nothing less is acceptable.

Такие кадры сейчас можно видеть очень часто. Не только в Турции происходят катастрофичные события. Это не просто кому то не повезло с погодой. Существует закономерность. Желающих понять что же с ней не так
вроде хватает, но только толку от такого желания мало. Чтобы получить ответ одного желания недостаточно.Надо найти
объективную информацию. Поэтому приходится и дальше писать то что не все ещё поняли. Климат всё ухудшается.
А ведь можно повлиять на причину изменений. Есть разные варианты выхода из кризиса с климатом.
Но они вам могут не понравится Этого можно было бы избежать И войны тоже. С планетой можно вести диалог. Она разумное
существо. А мы молчим. хотя язык понятный Планете, нам доступен. Так и уйдём в артефакты, как молчаливое недоразумение.
Ведь наша деятельность, в данной нам среде обитания, далека от нужной степени разума. А ведь у нас есть инструмент с
помощью которого на первых порах можно сначала стабилизировать климат, чтобы катаклизмы не усиливались. А потом и вернуть
климат в нормальное состояние .И кстати довольно быстро. Иначе никак.
