UC Berkeley’s Central Sierra Snow Lab tweeted a video of the snow conditions and said 8.5 inches of snow had fallen in the area in the last 24 hours.
A powerful winter storm contributes to the formation of a decisive snow cover in the Sierra Nevada.
In the Central and Southern Sierra regions, snow cover is now more than 200 percent above the norm for this date and is 76 percent of the April 1 average, which is usually the peak, according to the California Department of Water Resources.
Snow cover in California’s mountains is some of the best in 40 years, officials said bolstering hope the drought-hit state will soon see relief in the spring as snow melts and begins to fill parched waterways.
The current storms are flooding central California and dumping snow into the Sierra Nevada, a beautiful mountain range that is home to national parks and scenic mountain trails and roads. This snow will never make a difference in Lake Mead, the epicenter of a 23-year “mega-drought” that has engulfed the southwest desert.
