Sri Lanka faces environmental disaster as oil pours from stricken ship – BBC News

Spread The Viralist

There are fears that hundreds of tonnes of oil could spill into the sea off Sri Lanka from a stricken cargo ship, adding to what is already a major environmental disaster.

The container ship caught fire and huge quantities of plastic pellets on board have already spread along Sri Lanka’s western coastline, polluting pristine beaches and threatening the country’s fishing industry.

  1. Nobody reports the identity of the ship owners? Who owns the cargo? Was the cargo of chemicals for industry or waste chemicals to be disposed of? Where was the cargo bound for? Did the ship have adequate fighting equipment for tis dangerous cargo? Is the ship and cargo insured? Who are the beneficiaries? Why are there no vessels installing barriers to limit the spread of pollution? Why is the clean-up team so small? Why aren’t the chemical companies providing modern equipment to clean up the chemicals and dangerous cargo?
The media (BBC) never seems to interview the politicians that are paid to manager problems and to protect the community. The cameras always seem to point at poor labourers with simple hand tools not up to the massive task of cleaning, protecting and assisting the victims.

  2. Sri Lanka a beautiful country with most corrupted uneducated political crooks in the world, who never served its citizens. They sale the whole country to China. If you are a Sri Lankan and university educated just go abroad and never come back

  3. How many times has this happened before?. How many times will this happen again? Answer: as long as there is a single drop of Oil left inside to Earth to pump out and sell for profit. The Earth could look like a Mad Max nuclear winter, and still they will pump the Oil.

  4. This happened because of the politics of sri lanka… my country is being destroyed day by day due to politics… I request international attention not to destroy a beautiful country…..😣😣😣

  5. There is ongoing violence against Palestinians in Jerusalem , where reporters and peaceful activists are being arrested and beated.
Israel hasn't abided by the ceasefire rules.

  6. This sort of disaster has been multiplied all over land and sea and air, yet we continue with fossils. We humans love to destroy our world apparently because we aren't stopping the oil and gas companies.

  8. It was not an accident but man made!! The corrupt government needs money urgently from the world bank and others, so this is most convenient. As usual, the poorest will not get a cent out of it. Things like this happen a lot in Sri Lanka. I feel sorry for the masses.

  9. 🌟The Sri Lankan government was able to put out the fire but did not put it out Greed for compensation🤬, politicians destroy a good country😞

  10. Where the fcuk that story came from. ? All state run government media laundries in sri lanka says there's no single drop of oil is leaking from this damn ship. In sri Lanka 90%media is controlled by this lousy barberic government, so we are in a dilemma whome to believe or what to believe anymore! This is a full scale Media cover-up campaign by srilankan government . Its a pretty much looks like a dangerous conspiracy against democracy

  11. No problem … "fuk the nature" make money , get rich… once the world is gone … you will take your money into the ground, they should be banned from transporting on sea, pay for all the damage and pay for the sea / ocean to be cleaned 100% , when will that happen?

  12. If there's potentially going to be an oil spill, why is there no inflatable oil containment boom around the area? If you're anticipating an oil spill, put something in place to contain the oil, oil floats ffs.

  13. Can they not quickly take another vessel and transfer all the oil into the new ship? I mean, we’re exploring Mars with a helicopter by now. This should be easy done.

  14. On 20 May, the vessel caught fire off the coast of Colombo. By 27 May it declared a total loss. It was still afloat, and the fire was thought to be under control by Sri Lankan Navy, Airforce & Indian Coast Guard. After burning for 12 days, the vessel sank on 2 June as it was being towed away to deeper waters. This is the worst marine ecological disaster in Sri Lankan history!
