Dubai's "Oil Independence" Is A Fairytale

Spread The Viralist

Dubai often likes to portray themselves as someone who has escaped their dependency on oil by cleverly investing in hospitality and tourism. They usually back up this claim by stating that less than 1% of their GDP comes from oil. While this sounds great at first glance, when we take a closer look, we’ll see that this is rather misleading. Even though less than 1% of Dubai’s GDP comes from oil doesn’t mean that oil helps the emirate in other ways. Likely the most obvious way in which oil plays a role in Dubai is through Abu Dhabi. The UAE is actually one of the most oil-rich countries in the world and almost all of that oil is located in Abu Dhabi. So, while Dubai isn’t able to produce their own oil and export it, they do often get loans, investments, and bailouts from Abu Dhabi. A perfect example of this was in 2008 when Abu Dhabhi bailed out Dubai with $10 billion. This bailout was crucial in completing the Burj Khalifa and keeping the emirate afloat. But, Dubai has yet to pay back Abu Dhabi for this bailout. This video explains how Dubai is still dependent on oil revenue through Abu Dhabi and why Dubai’s story of oil independence is nothing more than a fairytale.

  1. As someone who has studied history, this video is so awfully biased towards orientalist and imperialist tropes to the point where it's hilarious. It's like you read two unacademic books and became the all knowing.

  2. So Dubai is oil independent but since Abu Dhabi helps them out so they are oil dependent. this is your complete twist and its just bs and bs which just piles on throughout the video. thanks

  3. These cats have been living on credit for a long long time. Some of these insane projects cost are far beyond whats been told publicly. Its just not sustainable. You want to feel bad, but then you look into how they built and maintain these over the top projects. Borderline slave labor. A lot of horrible countries. But north koreas the best. Guys checks go straight to NK and they are paid from there. Take a guess how many of the thousands there ever see any portion of their earnings?

  4. They abuse FILIPINO people like myself in that country!.!.

That’s one of the reasons why I don’t want to visit that country!.!.

The concept of Human Rights doesn’t exist in that country!.!.

  5. This video can end in 15 seconds. Dubai is a state and they don't have oil. So youre right its misleading because Abu Dhabi has all the oil which is also the capital and makes up 95% of oil income and Dubai claiming 1% in oil is true. Why did you prolonged this video for no reason.

  7. Investment is your only way up to financial freedom. financial growth happens with a steady engagement in financial stability through solid investment. those who leave it to market dynamics to determine when to trade or not are either new to the Market or are probably just naïve. The market has seen far worse times than this, enlightened traders are taking advantage of the dip and pumping even more towards trading sessions <I stopped panicking about my BTC the very moment I started working with Kennet Gibbs last year, his confidence and skills is on a maximum level..

  8. Abu Dhabi needs to invest thier money some where, why no in thier own country, Dubai did seem to make could use of investments it received.

  9. Your thumbnails are more corrupt than African countries # your channel is a way of showing western asses are burning because of their immense wealth because of oil which they want to to grab but failed

  10. Why is it so much about Dubai and Saudi Arabia though? It’s almost a ‘Arabic Countries Logically Explained’ channel by now 🤷🏽‍♂️

  11. The migrant population is mostly south East Asians not western just like in other kingdoms in the middle East. In the past mostly working in construction and service but now working more office jobs.

  12. No offense to you or your content, but I believe that you have approached this video in a bit of a strange manner. I believe a more interesting question to ask is, how dependent are they? What I mean by this is that I do not believe anyone thinks that the UAE in general is not dependent on oil. That is not the point, the point is that they are investing and growing their economy away from oil, rather than investing and optimizing their oil production as if it will be their main staple forever. I also don’t see why you would focus only on one emirate, they are all very well intertwined. This is coming from someone who has lived in Abu Dhabi since I was a child. UCLA graduate and U.S Citizen. I can tell you that the entire country has drastically changed since I was young. Amazing content nonetheless, you never cease to put out great content. I would also like to note I do not believe this place is perfect by any means. The exploitative nature of this country is what has made it grow to this degree (with oil $ to begin, of course.) I would suggest looking into their labor sourcing, and how they have used it to grow their cities exponentially for a fraction of what it would cost anywhere else. It is one of the ugliest things about this country as a whole, but vital to its success
