The National Hurricane Center (NHC) elevated tropical cyclone Julia to hurricane status shortly after 7 p.m. on Saturday with the storm churning around 125 miles northeast of Nicaragua, according to a previous advisory. By Sunday morning, Julia had developed into a Category 1 hurricane. Early on Sunday, Hurricane Julia slammed into Nicaragua’s central Caribbean coast after making a close pass-by of Colombia’s San Andres island earlier in the day.
