Should We Keep the Hubble Telescope Alive or Let It Crash and Burn?

Spread The Viralist

The shiny, new James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled to launch soon, but what’s going to happen to Hubble?

“While Hubble is healthy now, the telescope — a joint project of NASA and the European Space Agency — is not immortal. Serious problems could conceivably crop up in a number of different Hubble systems.”

The James Webb Space Telescope Will Truly Do What Hubble Only Dreamed Of

“The James Webb Space Telescope will teach us an incredible amount about the Universe, including further details about how stars form, what the earliest stellar populations look like, will show us gas giants and rogue planets in unprecedented detail and will tell us what made up the Universe at any given time in the past.”

Webb vs Hubble Telescope

“Webb often gets called the replacement for Hubble, but we prefer to call it a successor. After all, Webb is the scientific successor to Hubble; its science goals were motivated by results from Hubble.”

  1. Ugh don’t you hate it when your production schedule gets messed up by NASA? Yes, the James Webb launch has been delayed to 2020! We filmed this video prior to that announcement and, as you noticed, incorrectly say it’s launching in 2019. Looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer to see our shiny, new friend in orbit! — Victoria, Seeker Team

  2. I vote for capturing Hubble with SpaceX's StarShip and bringing it back to put in the Smithsonian. While it would be great to keep it functioning the fact is that with the super-heavy lift rockets coming online over the next several years, and with advances in modern technology, we will be able to put far more capable telescopes into orbit at a fraction of the price it costs today. It would seem a real shame to de-orbit such a significant piece of astronomical, scientific and human history. Capturing it would also allow for the demonstration of current capabilities and would both inspire the world, and a new generation of engineers, as well as provide a massive 'feel-good factor' for America and reinvigorate peoples faith in the western democratic and capitalist systems, which is greatly needed at this time when it appears so challenged by the rise of China and their system of governance.

  3. All directions lead to Asgaurd. Just float straight, avoid invisible black holes. And bank right. God made it habitable. I was born there a couple times.

  4. I hope that we keep Hubble alive until we have at least two other similar space telescopes that can replace its functions. I've often wondered why a second Hubble never went up, creating some spectacular binocular images for the world to delight over.

  5. The hubble telescope will be a historic object for future generations. It should be maintained and kept in orbit if the cost is not unreasonable.

  6. If the instruments are likey to fail, and could cause the telescope to go rogue and crash into something else in orbit, then it should be decommissioned.

  7. it should be completely replaced with a larger version. Hubble should be set to orbit and taken back to Earth to be put on display.
Hubble is far too old and should of been replaced LONG ago.

  8. They should keep it working as long as possible because two eyes in the universe are better than one.It might not have the distance but it will continue its mission more locally.(hehe that is an understatement)
