On the 23rd May 2022, an #Airbus #A320 was performing a standard RNP #approach into Runway 27R at Charles De Gaulle #Paris. Unknown to the pilots at the time, the aircraft was on a #descent path straight into the ground below. How was this possible and why did the pilots not notice? Let’s explore

  1. Can you enlighten us why don’t they use the radio altimeter as their main source for the minimum altitude rather than the baro altitude given that there might be an error when people put in erroneous baro figure?

  2. Peter, you always amaze me with your knowledge and professional attitude and "easy" to understand videos. Quality second to none. Best flying channel. I love plains, but never been flown 🙁
My dad has 60 jumps… Military paratrooper.
I avoid Dutch Pilot Girl… Many things comes to mind, so i am little bit distracted when I see her videos :p
    Greetings from Croatia!

  3. Since I flew CAE simulators I imagined the RA to call out "SIX" right as they pull up just like when I over-flare and the RA reads some whacky number like "SEVENTEEN"

  4. Transmitting important data over voice is fundamentally a wrong method. Human errors are a cause for most incidents. The more work gets done by computers, the more effective human resources can be used.

  5. Jesus Christ, that controller almost killed them not once, but three times. This single point of failure is crazy, a nuclear reactor would never have such a flaw allowed.

  6. Reminds me of an RAF crash back in the 1960s when an RAF Argosy hit a 50gal drum while performing a turn after a fly past of an airstrip.

  7. I wonder if it would be reasonable to add a 'check letter' to the barometric pressure value, so that similar sounding numbers would rendered obviously different.

An imperfect but very simple protocol would be to take the remainder of QNH / 23 and use that result to pick the letter.

QNH 1001 would be called out as QNH 1001 Lima. QNH 1011 would become QNH 1011 Victor. Now they sound very different.

Any place where QNH is displayed by software this would be an easy change to implement. Mechanical indicators would be another story. But this seems a simple procedure change to add a bit of redundancy where it seems essential.

  8. Great video as usual . Don't , at least airliners have a laser , optical , or audio altimeter on board ???? Even many Zepplins had optical range finders to get altitude readings …

  9. I have wifi high def infrared and normal vision cameras in my home. Why don't planes have camera views of the wings/engines tail and landing gear for the pilots in he cockpit.? Seems like the aircraft industry is neglecting an important safety opportunity!

  10. If you're a passenger on an airliner, you will most likely be unaware of any errors, electrical or mechanical problems, until some catastrophic crash occurs, which you may, or may not survive. That's why I prefer NOT to fly. There are just too many things which can go wrong. Even though fatal accidents may be relatively rare, there can be no guarantee that you will arrive safely at your destination, and as a passenger you have zero control over the situation.

  11. I am not a pilot but to me it is common sense from watching these videos that pilots and controllers using all these different languages and methods of measurement it is no question why there are so many crashes and near crashes it seems to be all the use of all the different languages and methods of measurement is a big problem.

  12. Sounds like they had a slightly dyslexic controller in tower. To keep announcing the wrong numbers. Thank goodness for on the ball pilots making sure they are going by their own readings and instruments. But not all of them.
It's no wonder the black box information was, strangely lost. Sounds like no-one wanted to be responsible for all these failures in comm and setting irresponsibilities.

  13. So why the hell are aircraft using such an antiquated means to determine altitude?? These aircraft have GPS and radar to provide an accurate reading of altitude. Depending only on air pressure in this day and age is just down right stupid!

  14. I am still new to learning about aircrafts but what is the pressure setting for he said they need the local pressure setting is this to pressurize the cabin and is it to pressurize and depressurize for when you go up or down it altitude?? I thought the cabin automatically pressurized and automatically adjust as well if you go up or down in altitude.

If someone could explain that would be cool also what is a local pressure code?? And why is there diff codes for diff areas??

  15. Most commercial jet jockies are chronic alcoholics and are often drunk on the job. This kind of thing happens every day and is covered up by the company administrators.
BE SAVE TAKE A BUS, TRAIN, CAR OR BOAT

  16. I've never flown an airplane. As a motor vehicle driver and motorcycle rider I have always followed the basic principles and techniques of operating the type of vehicle I'm in or on. And as my father rest his soul, always emphasized " you have to have your head on a swivel, you have to have eyes all around your head. And always use the mirrors!" Along with the myriad of other things you're supposed to do. I can't imagine "missing" ANY bit of information and not asking to have something repeated and confirmed if I was at the controls of an aircraft. And then checking EVERYTHING AGAIN. And especially when the weather is iffy.
No excuse for this having occurred. Both ATC and pilots did not have their heads in the game.
