Earthquake in Japan
On Wednesday, March 16, 2022, a strong earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Fukushima in northern Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck at a depth of 60 kilometers below sea level. A possible tsunami was also reported.
The region is part of northern Japan, which was hit 11 years ago by a powerful 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that also caused the meltdown of nuclear power plants. Wednesday’s quake came just a few days after the 11th anniversary of that disaster was celebrated.
Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, which operates the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which suffered multiple accidents after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami destroyed its cooling systems, said workers are checking for possible damage.
The quake shook much of eastern Japan, including Tokyo, where buildings shook violently. There are no reports of casualties or damage.
Flooding in Australia
While many parts of northern and eastern New South Wales in Australia are recovering from widespread flooding that began in late February, heavy rain has triggered flash flooding in the far west of the state.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology reported that 26 mm of rain fell in 30 minutes. In just a day, 72.4 mm of precipitation fell at Broken Hill Airport. Local media reports that numerous local residents have reported that the figure is grossly understated.
Flooding in Malawi
Malawi authorities say at least 4 people have died as a result of heavy rain caused by Cyclone Gombe.
Authorities have issued warnings for Mulanye, Nsanje, Chikwawa, Phalombe, Zomba, Machinga, Thiolo, Chiradzulu, Blantyre and Mangochi counties. Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management has urged people living in flood-prone areas to move to higher ground and avoid crossing flooded rivers.
Cyclone Gombe brought heavy rains of over 100mm in 24 hours, flooding areas in the Southern Region including Chikwawa, Mulanje and Nsanje where roads were blocked, resulting in severe disruption to traffic.
Heavy rains and flooding caused damage to the camp, which was home to people previously displaced by the floods.
Three people died as a result of flooding or rain in the Machinga region and about a fourth in the Mangochi region.
№4 2022 will be hot
Scientists are almost certain that 2022 will be one of the 10 hottest years on record.
In its monthly report, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a U.S. federal agency, said the year is already off to a hot start.
In January and February, the global surface temperature was the sixth hottest on record. This means that it is almost certain (over 99 percent) that 2022 will be in the top 10 hottest years.
The new data also showed that there is a 28.6 percent chance that 2022 will be in the top five hottest years and a 2.8 percent chance that it will be the hottest year ever recorded.
#5 Philippines earthquake
A strong earthquake, registered by the USGS with a magnitude of 6.4, occurred off the coast of Luzon (Philippines). The agency reports a depth of 11 km. Magnitude 6.4 at a depth of 29 km.
The epicenter was about 67 km from Cabra (pop. 3,261) and 118 km from Mariveles (pop. 84,567).
About 20,000 people live within 100 km.
It is estimated that more than 30 million people felt a slight tremor.
According to all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
The USGS has issued a green alert due to fatalities and economic losses associated with shaking. There is a low probability of casualties and damage.
