As you may have noticed, we like to blow stuff up on this channel. So when the International Red Cross approached us to collaborate on a video about nuclear weapons, we were more than excited.
Until we did the research. It turned out we were a bit oblivious off the real impact of nuclear weapons in the real world, on a real city. And especially, how helpless even the most developed nations on earth would be if an attack occurred today.
So hopefully this video demonstrates how extremely non fun a real world nuclear attack would be, without being too gruesome. This collaboration was a blast (no pun intended) and we want to say a huge thank you to the International Red Cross!

  1. To be honest, I'm almost sure that if weren't for the vast nuclear arsenal existing in Russia and US, Europe would be engaging in a widespread war right now. Or World War 3 would have already happened a long time ago. The problem isn't the technologies available, but the mentality. Politicians with tribal minds living in a post-industrial era. That's recipe for disaster, as it was with previous world wars. Nuclear bombs are devastating tools with the power of controlling inter-state widespread violence but at the same time, they have the potential of resetting civilization, throwing us in a radioactive dark age. And only because the tribal mentality continues.

  2. the hiroshima bomb was 15 kilotons. equivalent to 15 thousand tons of TNT or 30 million pounds of TNT.

Obviously a hell of a bomb but nothing compared to what weve got today.

now i have no idea what the yield of the average nuclear bomb is these days. especially since some have mutiple warheads designed to be deployed after the missle has re-entered the earths atmosphere.

back in the 50s the russians tested what is allegedly the largest thermonuclear weapon ever created. originally designed with an explosive yield of 100 megatons, or the eqivalent of 100 trillion tons of TNT. Put another way, it would have been 7 thousand times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. It was downgraded to 50 megatons after concerns were rasised that the explosion might be too powerful for the bomber to escape the blast radius. Even then the shockwave circled the earth 3 times and shattered windows up to 1000 km away.

For the sake of argument let us say the average thermonuclear bomb(which is a nuclear device using fission (the spliting of the atom) to initiate a much more powerful, fusion-type reaction(joining on two atoms)) has a yield of around 10 megatons. this is far smaller than the one tested by the Russians but still…literally…600 times more powerful than the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima.

for a 1 megaton bomb the "immediate death blast radius" would be about 6-7 km or 3-4 miles. Anything within 4 miles of this explosion would be dead almost instantly

for something 10 times that power, a 10 megaton weapon. the blast radius would not scale by 10 but you would have something between 8 and 9 km of total destruction in every direction from its center.

doing some basic math…the AREA of destruction would be the area of the circle with this radius. radius 9.

    area of a circle is pi (r)^2=3.14 (9 km)^2

    =3.14(81)=240 square km

    or 3.14(6)^2=105 square miles.

with each square mile equaling 660 acres we have (660)(105)=69,300 acres. as a conservative estimate.

the area of new york city i found on google, as an example, is listed 784 square km. this one bomb with a blast area of 240 square km would be enough to destroy about a third of the city. within the first few seconds.

most of the 8-9 million inhabitants would be vaporized or die within a few days from the resulting third degree burns and radiation.

that is one example with one particuar bomb and one city. we can adjust the strength and or number of warheads and the size and area of the city for different situations

during an all-out nuclear exchange cities would be hit, but there would be many other targets. including, military bases, naval bases, enemy ICMB sites, power plants, infrastructure, dams, troop concentrations, airports, communication instalations. anything that military intelligence deems a threat, or a resource would be in the crosshairs.

all these targets are already loaded into the computers and guidance systems of ours and the enemies' weapons.

all it would take would be the push of a button… and our planet would be almost as unihabitable as the other 7 or 8 planets in our solar system

  3. And to think that the US was the first country to use nuclear weapons, and somehow still maintains the moral high ground. This level of global hyprocrisy is quite staggering.

  4. Definitely knocking on wood, but if it ever happened, I'm pretty sure the UN would investigate the politics behind those actions before declaring WWIII. It's horrifying.

  5. Not hard to guess why Youtube algorithm has shown this to more people nowadays… What I wonder is why did humans invent nuclear weapons in the first place. It's just so self-destructive to the entire human race. You don't see bunnies inventing nukes and trying to race to who can make the biggest one. Bunnies just burrow, eat and try to make enough extra bunnies so that nature doesn't run out of bunnies. Humans would hurt themselves just to spite each other and I will never understand that.

  6. Illustrations like this are very useful to viscerally remind people of how important it is to avoid nuclear war. And we have the grim history of what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we know it is not worth it due to the suffering it causes.

  7. Friendly reminder that the rotten country called United States of America has been the only country in history to launch not one, but two nuclear weapons.

  8. If you ask me, all the countries should somehow get rid of nuclear weapons and use that power for energy. Like it's best energy source + there will be no danger of nuclear war and etc. It's the only way to somehow get peace around the world, at least for short period of time…

  9. Getting rid of nukes would be like getting rid of guns in America. The damage is done and humans won't learn until we are nuked to near extinction. And it's prob coming soon.

  10. Si ésto llega a suceder, será el más terrible fracaso de los humanos y destruiremos toda flora y fauna sobre la faz de la tierra

  11. That's what happened to Nagasaki and Hiroshima civilian population by the biggest criminal of history … the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. And no one talk about it, …
