There’s not much more comforting than a plate of Thai style Hainanese Chicken Rice in Thailand known as Khao Man Gai (ข้าวมันไก่ also spelled Kao Man Gai or Khao Mun Gai).

Today I hit the streets of Bangkok’s bustling Pratunam district to go to a restaurant that’s serves Thai Hainanese Chicken Rice so fast, they don’t even have time to hang the chickens like normal restaurant that serve Khao Man Gai (ข้าวมันไก่) do!

Hainanese Chicken Rice ข้าวมันไก่ is a simple dish. The chicken is boiled in water, chopped up into bite sized pieces and served over a plate of rice that has been cooked with the chicken broth and fat to make it extra fragrant and flavorful.

Khao Man Gai (ข้าวมันไก่) is served along with a bowl of chicken soup and a sauce that can be the real make or break factor of the dish. The sauce should be sour, spicy, and maybe a little sweet to go well over the chicken rice.

Now I’m not saying that Khao Man Gai (ข้าวมันไก่) is a bad Thai dish, I’m just saying that’s it’s not the most flavorful Bangkok street food dish out there – but it’s very comforting and soothing on the stomach.

During this video I went to a restaurant known as Kaiton Pratunam (Ko-Ang) ไก่ตอนประตูนำ้ (โกอ่าง) in the busy central shopping district of Bangkok, Thailand known as Pratunam.

This Thai restaurant no only specializes in Chicken Rice (ข้าวมันไก่), but also in Khao Moo Op (ข้าวหมูอบ) which is rice with baked pork and delicious chicken soup (น้ำซุบ).

Here’s the address and information you need to visit this same Bangkok restaurant:

Kaiton Pratunam (Ko-Ang)
Soi Petchaburi 30, New Petchaburi Road, Makkasan, Bangkok, Thailand
Open: 5:30 am – 3:30 pm and 5 :00 pm – 3:00 am

ไก่ตอนประตูนำ้ (โกอ่าง)

เปิด 5.30 – 15.30 น. และ 17.00 – 3.00 น.
โทร. 0-2252-6325

So though it’s not one of the best Thai dishes, Hainanese Chicken Rice in Thailand is a plainer dish that will surely be comforting and easy on the stomach.

Grab a plate of Khao Man Gai (ข้าวมันไก่)!

  1. Just returned from my vacation in Thailand and I do miss this dish soooo much! After so many meals of flavorful street foods, it was nice to have a bland and homey chicken rice dish with plain chicken soup (similar to what us Hmong folks make at home).

BTW- we watched tons of your videos before our trip and thank you for all your work! Keep it up! Can't wait for our next trip.

  2. I love Hainanese Chicken! In KL, there is a big shopping mall called Sogo and they sell it there, I always go there. The chicken was tender, a bit juicy, always fresh. They serve it with green and red chilli sauce, along with soy sauce and extra delicious chicken broth/soup sprinkled with coriander in a small bowl. Soooo good!

  3. Gotta love that Pinoy T-shirt!  Haha.  Great video again.  I can't wait to get to Bangkok next Friday.  So many food you post up that I must have.  And that Yao Ming face in ecstasy you make after every bite.  Must do that bro!

  4. They say, like Phad Thai, Khao Man Gai is supposedly originally a Chinese dish that Thai people assimilated/adopted and made their own. I love how food influences cross borders !!! mmmmhhhhhhh

  5. "Not one of Thailand's best dishes"?? I LOVE Khao Man Gai!!But I know what you mean. Imho Thai people don't ONLY eat hot hot hot, and even once in a while get fed up of too much spiciness. It is a good contrast dish, and I find it extremely comforting. I feel home, whenever I cook and eat this! Same for Kai Paloh (another non-spicy dish with pork, 5-spicey broth and boiled egg…you already introduced to us!). However, give me spicy Tom Yum, Gaeng Som, Som Dtum & Gai Yang anyday! So hungry now 😀

  6. we use chicken thighs for a more juicy and tender chicken. and i dip the chicken into the sauce rather than drizzling it over it.

  7. Hainanese chicken rice is one of my favourite asian dishes ever!
It looks so bland and basic but it is the sauce and the juicy chicken that makes this dish amazing! And I actually don't like rice much at all, but when i do eat rice, i have to have it like this 🙂

  8. Hainanese chicken and rice in California is so good . We have a better sauce made out of grated ginger, green onion, canola old and salt. I think you just had it with the wrong sauce
