Isan Food at Somchai Pochana (สมชัยโภชนา)
Spread The Viralist

Somchai Pochana (สมชัยโภชนา) is a restaurant located in the tiny town of Chumpuang (ชุมพวง โคราช), near Khorat in the province of Isaan. On the same visit as the vlog I made about visiting Chumpuang (ชุมพวง โคราช), we also ate at this wonderful restaurant.

Isan (also known as Isaan) is well known throughout Thailand for its delicious food. Perhaps the most famous dish is som tam, or green papaya salad, but there are so many more dishes than just that. Sticky rice is the staple for Isaan food, and it goes so well, dipping bites of sticky rice into sauces and dressing while you’re eating.

The first dish I ate at this restaurant is called oo plia (อุเพลี้ย), and I know the description of the soup might not sound too good, but basically it’s uncleaned intestines from the cows, that are boiled and made into a soup. The soup then included a bunch of different beef pieces, mostly trip, and pieces of actual meat, and a lot of chilies and herbs to complement it. It was quite an interesting soup, the flavor was mostly meaty beefy. However, the more I ate it, and getting to the bottom of the soup, it started getting extremely bitter, almost medicine like. It was pretty intense, and while I did like it, it got harder and harder to eat more towards the bottom of the bowl.

Next up I had tom pla neen (ต้มปลานิล), a boiled tilapia fish in an outstanding soup made from lots and lots of herbs like lemongrass, galangal, shallots, and plenty of dry chilies. The fish was then topped in a huge handful of fresh green onions and cilantro to give the soup an amazing flavor. Probably my favorite Isan food of our meal at Somchai Pochana (สมชัยโภชนา) was this dish.

We also ordered an Isan dish called koy neua suk (ก้อยเนื้อสุก), which is similar to the more common lab (or larb), which is a Thai meat salad. You can order it raw, but we got ours cooked. It was mostly a combination of beef, cooked, and seasoned with lime juice, fish sauce, and chilies. It was fantastic.

Somchai Pochana (สมชัยโภชนา) is just a very local Isan food restaurant in the countryside of Isan, but they serve some delicious food.
