Tsunami 2004 Indonesia [IGEO TV]

Spread The Viralist

One of the coolest events in memory was the tsunami of December 26, 2004. An earthquake 0f 4,000 meters deep in the Indian Ocean , about 260 kilometers west of the coast of Aceh, Indonesia , that would reach 9 degrees on the Richter scale, caused a tsunami that wiped chain map literally islands, beaches and populations , which were submerged in a thick layer of mud and water. About 300,000 people died.

The incredibly devastating proportions phenomenon affected at 5 million people. On March 2005, it was estimated that more than a million people were left homeless and 300,000 of all nationalities (many tourists spent in the Christmas holidays) died in a dozen of countries, most of these, 170,000 countries, in Indonesia, but also thousands in India, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

The epicenter of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake corresponds to the Indian Ocean near the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) that monitors earthquakes worldwide. Violent movement of the sections of the Earth’s crust, called plates, the displacement of large quantities of water, sending powerful shock waves in all directions.

The result of December 26, was a rupture the USGS estimates was more than 1,000 kilometers long , displacing the seafloor above the rupture of maybe 10 meters to several meters horizontally and vertically. That does not sound like much, but the trillions of tons of rock that were moved along hundreds of miles caused the planet to shudder with the largest magnitude earthquake in 40 years.

About the displaced or broken seabed, the large volume of the ocean is moved along the line of rupture, initiating the creation of one of the most deadly phenomena of nature: a tsunami. Within hours the huge waves that radiate in the earthquake hit the coast of 11 Indian Ocean countries, snatching people into the sea, others drowned in their homes or on beaches, and demolishing property from Africa to Thailand.

  1. Oooooooh, how can we make a video of the destructive tsunami for about a minute long and get people to go oooooh, aaaaaah, woooooow….I know, put it to music….yeah, that will make 'em go "get the popcorn"…..NOT. What a stupid video based on stolen footage from somewhere else and set to music. Bored are you? Too lazy to take live footage yourself? I dare you…DARE YOU, to find a person that actually went through that tsunami and had a loved one DIE from it and to their face say."That was the coolest" You can take out an ad in some Indonesian paper or just go on Youtube asking the survivors to contact you and have a face to face interview and then video their reaction when you ask them what is in your description box "How COOL WAS THAT ?!!!" Hope they spit in your face.

  2. How do the two fit together? A quarter of a million people dying in less than one hour and the word Cool? I'll sit whilst you explain, as I have a feeling this is going to take you a while!

Please think of changing this description to something more fitting, perhaps cataclysmic event? I realise you're probably young, and have never truly experience loss yet, but it's always wise when talking about a subject we might know nothing of to sit for a few minutes and think it through before committing to it. Especially if it is an event that involved a lot of pain for a lot of people. Trust me this will save a lot of people feeling hurt, yourself included.

  3. It is NOT 'one of the coolest events in memory', how can you say this when so many people died? With a quarter of a million people dead because of such a horrific event and
two million people were made homeless.

  4. The Japan tsunami caused Bigger/greater damage compared to the Acheh tsunami.
The third tsunami strike will cause at least/minimum double the Japan tsunami damage.

  5. Not "Cool" at all. Many people died from this. It was horrible! If you watch the video of people pulling bodies out of the debris you wont think it's very cool. Seeing dead children being pulled out will break your heart.
