Hippos Save Wildebeest from Crocodiles!

Hippos Save Wildebeest from Crocodiles!
Spread The Viralist

Incredible footage showing some rare interactions, captured on a safari with Chasin’ Africa Safaris (Book with them here: http://bit.ly/ChasinAfrica) at one of the top dams in Kruger, Gezanftombi Dam, near Crocodile Bridge.

Chase told Latestsightings.com of this ordeal: “We stopped to watch all the animals come down to drink and saw a cool heron surfing on the back of a hippo, it was an enjoyable sight having all the different species around.

An unsuspecting group of wildebeest sauntered down to the water’s edge for a drink when a huge crocodile jumped right out and immediately grabbed one of the wildebeest, keeping its jaws locked on the animals head. Next moment another croc raced in to try and get something off the menu. The hippos close by seemed to be very perturbed by what was happening and it looked for a moment as if they also wanted to join in on this kill. They kept the wildebeest surrounded and it all looked like a pretty hopeless situation.

The wildebeest was obviously exhausted and it seemed as if the hippos sensed its fear of the whole ordeal. They calmly kept close by to wildebeest but he seemed to have spooked and picked up a second wind changing direction and seeking another escape route. The hippos followed until he reached the shore and managed to get himself out of the water but his back foot was completely injured and one could not help but wonder what his final outcome would be if with the damage he endured.

It was exciting to watch in the beginning but then a deep sense of sadness overcame everyone. Nature can be cruel but the circle of life must go on”.

  1. I hate to say it but after seeing it's leg it might have been worse off. Hyenas or wild Dogg's will eat the thing alive like zombies. Crocs would've drowned it pretty quick or even rolled and obliterated it. Not as bad a way to go compared to some alternatives. Watching hyenas eat prey will give you nightmares. Wish there was a ranger type job who just drove around and capped critically injured animals to save them suffering. Free food for predators too. There's no doctor in the wild.

  2. That wildebeest will be dead in less than an hour. Lions hang out by those Rivers waiting to hit an injured animal. It was better off being killed quickly by alligator than slowly by suffocation of a lion or slowly eaten by hyenas even worse! Imagine watching animals eat you while you dive worse and worse into shock. Hyenas don't suffocate their prey. They bite by bite dig in for the organs.

  3. It's great seeing that wildebeest survive that attack, but knowing it's now easy prey for something else is sad. People's concept of animal life is their visit to the zoo. This, sadly is what it's really like. One hungry animal trying to eat another animal alive. Slow, painful death. Over and over. Nature is fucked up.

  4. THE PAIN? HE SUFFERING RIGHT NOW AFTER THE ATTACK HURTS WORSE THAN THE CROC CLAMPING DOWN ON HIS AZZ? IN THE INITIAL AMBUSH? & LITERALLY IF HIS WISH WAS TO LIVE TO SEE ANOTHER DAY THEN THAT WISH WAS GRANTED BECAUSE THAT'S ALL IT WILL BE JUST ONE MORE DAY & THAT'S IT?
