Insane moment two KOALAS get into a fight.

The insane moment is captured when two koalas get into a vicious, brutal brawl at a South Australia animal sanctuary on August 16.

A male koala (the larger one climbing the tree in the video) approaches a female already nested at the top of the tree and begins to engage, but according the filmer —Gaylene, who works as a tour guide, at the Kangaroo Island Odysseys animal sanctuary — this was out of mating season and highly unusual.

Screeching and shrieking in rage, the koalas exchange blows and grapple as they descend down the tree, then continue lashing out on the ground before the male eventually concedes defeat and wanders away to recover.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Gaylene said, a long-time employee at the animal sanctuary.

The brutal battle ended with both koalas walking away relatively unscathed.

  1. Think it was just a male trying to get him some. Finally decided it wasn't worth the trouble and went off to take care of it himself. Have been in that situation.

  2. They territorial and need to be back in their own habitat asap where they have more freedom to roam instead of being cooped up in a small enclosure.

  3. 1:20 – imagine this: me as a young 24 years old, camping out in the Bush for the first time. In the middle of a pitch black night in the Australia bush, I staggered out of my tent, still half asleep, to have a pee under a gum tree furthest from the camp. Dropped my pyjama pants and squatted down under the tree to relieve my full bladder, only to hear THAT EXACT SAME SOUND ABOUT 6 feet above my head!!! I nearly sh*t myself instead! I covered the 20 meters back to the tent, in about 5 seconds!

  4. The smaller one, making all the noise, is a female expressing her UNWILLINGNESS to mate with the male trying to mount her! LOL At 1:09 you can hear him grunting and grumbling as he walks away, a sound that only male Koalas make when they proclaim their territory. An easy way to identify a female Koala is by their more 'delicate', smaller nose than the boof-head honker on the males! LOL

  5. This is koalas' natural behaviour! Brawls like these are common between youngsters of many species and take place for the establishing of dominance, survival of the fittest, inoculation by stress for future encounters with predators, etc.
