A WILDLIFE ranger has captured dramatic footage of a wounded hippopotamus fighting off FIVE adult lions. 28-year-old field guide, Daniel Bailey, positioned his camera just metres away from the awe-inspiring attack in the middle of the MalaMala Game Reserve, South Africa. As the giant hippo tried to find its way to a limited supply of water, in the dry month of May 2018, two male lions just happened to be sleeping on the ridge line above. With the hippo racing around, the male lions were alerted and called for their pride as three lionesses quickly approached the scene, along with four of their cubs. The adult predators went to work and tried to take the distressed hippo down by biting and clawing at its back. Described as ‘never-before-seen action’, it seems as though the hungry pride bit off more than it could chew on this occasion, as the hippo battled to safety.

Well, if an animal is very young,old,sick or injured, it will be a sitting duck for predators. And this Hippo is clearly in a weakened state. No wonder the lions tried having a go at it. As mentioned in the video, it's already been wounded in a fight with another Hippo. Moreover, it's the dry season. So the Hippo doesn't have enough to eat, causing it to be malnourished. You can see that it looks rather scrawny and even its backbone can be seen protruding from its body.

This Hippo is not in the best of health and it clearly didn't put up much of a fight. Though it still had just enough strength to shake off the attack.
Looks like they are the two Matshapiri males. So it could not happen in may 2018 because the mohawk matshapiri died in July 2017.
It was not in 2018 as one of those 2 males died in middle 2017.
An old hippo will be prey. We can't see easily when a hippo is near death. It's a matter of survival that lions pay attention to prey animals. I bet that hippo is not going to survive very long. A series of near misses will eventually end in "meat (read hippo) is back on the menu boys!"
The hippo is one of the most dangerous animals in the world. I love them. If I was a billionaire I would create a hippo sanctuary and engineer a genetic hippo hybrid, which would then escape like the Indominus rex in Jurassic World lol.
