Hurricane Katrina Animal Rescue

Hurricane Katrina Animal Rescue
Spread The Viralist

THE FIRST PART OF THE VIDEO HAS NO AUDIO. THIS IS ON PURPOSE. My name is Terri Keefer. I went to New Orleans for animal rescue, five weeks post Katrina. There was a temporary shelter housing all animals, about one hour outside of New Orleans. It was called Lamar-Dixon in Gonzales, LA. We took care of animals there, before most were transported out of state. No one in Louisiana would take them. The animals in the city were terrified, and many would run from us. Others were injured, sick, aggressive or already dead. We did everything we could to save just one animal. We spent two hours prying an air conditioner out of a window only to find the cat we were trying to save was dead. I want to commend all rescuers for their tireless efforts, hard work and willingness to live in extreme conditions (mosquitoes, 103 degree heat, lack of food). I had never attempted animal rescue before this, now it is a huge part of my life. Most of the photos I took while literally running from place to place. Some of the field rescue photos were generously given to me by HSUS to use for my non-profit, non-commercial, personal video account of my time spent there. Thanks for watching.
MUSIC: Celine Dion – Prayer – live on Larry King when she was speaking to him about her disgust of the rescue efforts during Katrina; The Carpenters – Bless the Beasts and the Children; Melissa Etheridge – Heal Me.

  1. Terri, I also would to be a rescue volunteer. Terri I got to ask you thought. I saw some rescue org..volg a couple months ago, and these two rescue guys were in I thought the New Orleans area. They kept finding dogs, that were shot in the head. They followed the sounds of the shots, and what do they find. Supposed Cops riding from a little just gunning these dogs down. This has greatly distressed me. Do you know anything about this?.

  2. Clips of this nature make Youtube brilliant. I always chuckle very hard. But a large percentage of everyday people are gradually over time KILLING their pet dogs (without spotting it)… The stuff which they insert into dog food induces cancerous cells and makes pet dogs die early.. To conserve your dog's life it's vital to check out Double Life Dog Diet (Use Google.) It's what I did.

  3. This would be a good video for a reason to get your animal microchipped!! Its so cheap and to be renuited with your pet if disaster strikes…priceless!!!!

  4. God bless all the volunteers. My daughter and I just watched this video. She is only 5, and we are both in tears. I have so much love for animals. I was just starting to think that my daughter had no sympathy or empathy, and she burst into tears. We have had many many rescued animals over the years (mostly before she was born.) Bless you all, that's all I can say.

  5. You are most welcome. There are opportunities going on locally for you everyday. They may not be in the form of floods or Hurricanes, but local rescues need help all the time. Think about it!
KT is a Chow/Shepherd or Chow/Akita type… we don't know for sure. I just know she's lovely and wonderful and so happy.

  6. God it just makes me sick how people can just leave their pets. They warned you a huge hurricane was coming! How can people be heartless as to leave these poor creatures who depend on you behind? Especially locked in a house or tied to a chain where they cant even get away?! I know to some they are "just animals" but they are FAMILY, would you leave your family behind? THANK everyone who helped save these babies and gave them a new chance at life when the families they loved left them for dead!

  7. They saved 8.500 animals in katrina, 1.000 were reunited with owners and adopted , So what they did to the others ? Killed for not having homes ?
In the shelters they went in other cities ?

  8. Ha, that is so sad yet so wonderfull! Animals are, sadly, the ones to suffer the most thru crisi like this and are most of the time forgotten and left to fetch for themselves… What you guys did was simply wonderful. If I could, I would go and take some of those poor, alone animals and give them a home to stay…

God bless you, guys! You rocks!

  9. god bless all of you who took the time to rescue all of these animals. now i sit here and watch this video and i regret every day that i did not lend my hands to help the needy animals of New Orleans

  10. DancingSOS123: Most of this could have been prevented if shelters had let people take their pets with them. This has since been changed, people can now bring pets with them.

  11. Several times I had got permission to take time off from work, but never was able to hook up with anyone to go to rescue the animals. I had been angry with myself from 05 till this past oct, 08 when I went to New Orleans, and found out about the thousands of people that had gone and made a big difference, I am thankful to all who did go!
