Latest Update – As Of 27th August 2026

A catastrophic flash flood and mudslide triggered by a glacial collapse on Wednesday morning (August 26) along the Nepal-Tibet border has left at least 177 people dead and more than 1,300 people missing. The torrent of ice, rock, mud, and water tore through the mountainous Rasuwa district north of Kathmandu and Gyirong County in Tibet, obliterating entire villages, bridges, and roads.

The latest updates on the disaster include:
⚠️ Casualties & Missing Persons

– Death Toll:
The official death toll in Nepal has risen to 177, with an additional 3 deaths confirmed across the border in Tibet. Authorities expect these numbers to rise significantly.

– Massive Search for Foreigners:
More than 800 people are missing in Nepal and 558 are missing in Tibet, including over 700 foreign tourists, hikers, and workers.

– Nationalities Affected:
Among the missing international nationals are 177 from India, 65 from the US, 35 from Australia, 33 from the UK, 25 from Canada, and over 50 from Malaysia.🚁

Rescue Operations & Challenges

– Air and Ground Rescues:
The Nepalese military and emergency teams have deployed helicopters, drones, and search dogs. Over 100 survivors have been airlifted out, but severe damage to infrastructure—including the destruction of 19 bridges and 40km of highway—is hindering ground access to remote valleys.

– Secondary Threats:
The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the disaster was caused by a massive glacial detachment. Experts warn that unstable mud dams created by the debris, combined with a forecast of three days of continuous rain, pose an immediate risk of secondary flash floods and landslides.

Regional Impact:
The disaster has completely paralyzed the Gyirong Port, a critical commercial gateway handling nearly a third of all China-Nepal trade. Downstream, Indian border states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have been placed on high alert as river levels swell.International aid is beginning to mobilize, with neighboring countries dispatching emergency supplies and coordinating with embassies to track unaccounted-for travelers.
