I live in Appleton and it's a miracle no one died. It was raining outside and out of nowhere the skies turned black and we got a notification to seek shelter immediately. We never even got a "tornado watch" alert, so nobody saw it coming
Sadly hundreds of people in the neighboring town of Menasha got their houses destroyed. It was still EF1 while in Appleton, but quickly became EF3 by the time it reached them

Technically not a tornado – the wind speeds are tornadic but they don't spin. This is a derecho – a series of massive down bursts from a bow-shaped stormfront.
