We tend to think of disasters as inevitable – but often Mother Nature gives us vital clues which we foolishly ignore or overlook. This episode will take a close look at avalanches and what we can learn about how, where, and why they strike.
Catastrophic avalanches occur when huge slabs of snow break away from a mountain slope and roar downhill. These moving masses of snow and ice can reach speeds of more than 130 kilometres per hour within a matter of seconds. Any victims caught in such horrific events are hurled down the mountainside and buried alive. Most do not survive.
In this episode, we’ll look at two of the most terrifying avalanches in recent history; The Mount Everest Avalanches of 2015, which killed an estimated twenty-five climbers on the mountain, as well as bringing damage and injury to roughly 360 people at the base camp below. We then explore the deadly avalanches that have happened across the Alps through history, in particular, during the famous ‘Winter of Terror’ that took 265 lives in the 1950s.

Those sherpas are so precious and amazing. They sure dont get paid enough for what they do. They shoukd be on a 60/40 split with the companies who offer these expeditions. Even though the companies who employ them should recieve the 40 %! Being, they don't risk their lives as the sherpas do, for the clients.. the porters, who carry those heavy but essential packs, recieve even less ! It is really not fair, or right. The pay structure should also be set by Nepal, to insure they recieve at least 40% of the total amount paid.
And, being its a service they perform, they should be tipped the customary amount, which would be at least 18%, or more, for each of them who are part of caring and providing for each of the clients.

It's not like the snow can pile on indefinitely. It will eventually come down, so to blame it on "human activity" is ridiculous. How bout figure out what different weights of snow will endure before it breaks, then forecast accordingly.

I live in the Appalachian Mountains in NC. When I was a child we would get feet of snow during the winter. Now, I am almost 40 and we barely get any snow. I believe that with the decrease in snow worldwide, the avalanches will become less frequent but more destructive because the base layers under snow are ice.
SKIERS BEWARE! Most people who die in avalanches trigger the avalanche that kills them – just like the first one on this video (6:08), it will form all around the person with no way to get out of it.

As the Earth's snowfall continues to steadily decrease worldwide, remaining avalanches will be smaller but potentially more deadly with densely packed ice blocks not as easily detached by controllers.
