I went on a cruise to Alaska a few years ago and there was a lecture on the glaciers and the person said that they have seen how much glaciers have diminished over the last 10 years. So, yes, it is normal for glaciers to calve, but the whole process has been sped up by climate change and the glaciers aren't adding new ice as parts of it calve.
