‘We are full’: Dogs Trust sounds alarm for abandoned pets during the Christmas holidays

1. Absolutely shocking that anyone can abandon their dogs. I have two rescue dogs and would never dream of abandoning them even though they both have a few problems. But love and perseverance will win the day. I can't imagine not having either of them.

3. I wanted to adopt a cat and contacted several trusts. None of them would let me adopt because I don't have a garden, so I decided to buy a kitten instead. I am very happy, my cat is very happy. I play around 3 hours with her every day. Trusts need to stop complaining and reform their ways of thinking.

4. They need to stop being so fussy with who they will allow to adopt. Too old, garden too small, fence not secure enough, youre too old blah blah.

6. Dogs trust makes it nigh on impossible to adopt a pet. They are full by design.

7. Tried adopt a dog many times from different places and never heard anything back so I don’t know what to believe

10. Everyone’s fully exhausted to adopt pets. Implement a four day work week and maybe people will have the emotional capacity to look after dogs. Also no one can own houses anymore, it’s not like people can find a place to rent with a dog or have to pay £100 extra a month just to have a well behaved dog (and the new rules are bs landlords can still say no).

11. Managed to get my rescue Rottie from Dogs Trust home in time for Christmas.

13. If only everyone started adopting rescue dogs, I only ever do that. But people would rather spend stupid money to fly a breed in.

14. My friend tried to get one from them and was turned down, they do this process where they determine whether your home is big enough for one. All they want is money

16. Get stricter dog rules instead of banning breeds make people get a licence for strong dangerous breeds not ban them and stop letting anyone with a dog breed there dog how about that

17. If they let people who own a lease to their own flat have a dog on premises I would get one tomorrow. We have stupid laws not allowing pets even for people who have their own property

18. I have tried to adopt a dog from them, they are only interested in money

19. Adopt dont shop! The amount of puppies being bred is horrific and people are the ones who have to change their values around all animals

21. What I come to realize is people love the baby pet stage but once the pets get older they get replaced with another.

24. Two occasions I've been there to take a dog of then . They make it impossible so there own fault . Both occasions I drove there just to watch all employees dossing about and then when I wanted to see some dogs I had to go home look on the website and email.then . Even though I was there on two occasions . So I applied and had no response at all . Ended up going to a smaller charity who start to finish gave me a dog in 14 Days

25. They do this for dogs, but not for people

26. Not only because of the economy and increase in numbers but the processes. In many charities there are strict rules of who can adopt, how big your house is, home visits, your income etc. I’m taking care of feral and stray cats for a few years now but I won’t be quality if I want to adopt one.

27. This is likely down to everyone being made into renters and not having somewhere permanent to keep a dog.

28. Dogs Trust told us we couldn’t adopt from them because we hadn’t had a dog before.

29. I totally agree that dogs should be given warm loving homes not just at Xmas but for their entire lives. But when I was looking to adopt earlier this year I just couldn't understand how impossible Dogs Trust made it. After 6 months they kept saying nothing suitable and all the time i had to chase them as they said they wont speak to potential adopters unless they have a suitable dog. Within a month i hade a home visit and adopted elsewhere and my wonderful dog has just enjoyed his first ever Xmas

33. If I had money, I would open a lovely place for homeless people & abandoned animals. They'd have all the comfort, food, warmth, friendship & love they deserve & need ❤

34. It's not a nice situation but charities like Dogs Trust make it very very very difficult for people to adopt a dog, and then complain that they're full.

35. Neuter your pets. Stop buying from breeders and give a dog a second chance at life.

37. 3 rescue cats adopted here i love my animals i'd genuinely give them everything i had. I lost my favourite cat to cancer this year and because she wasn't eating the week she started to deteriorate we got her £8 steak. There was not a cat loved more than my Jazz – the old toothless black cat dumped at a cattery in lockdown who with us lived to 107! We need to treat abandoning animals much more seriously. Stop rogue breeding, introduce licensing and in covid there should've been more stringent checks. Animals are for life, a serious commitment. We need proper checks to ensure those buying or adopting animals are ready.

38. The problem with these charities is they make it impossible to adopt a dog… Long process most of the time they do not even write back

39. Unfortunately 300 pounds to purchase a puppy followed by vet fees no comment

40. They make it unbelievably difficult to rescue a dog.. we were going to adopt a dog but literally just couldn’t be bothered with all the bs. I get they have to ensure it’s a safe and good home but yeah.. got a wee lab in the end but we defo would of rescued instead if it was easier

44. Dogs trust .rspca ,vets etc are making it harder to adopt animals and afford to keep them.
