Michael Appalsamy, a lead guide for @WildEye recently hosted a tour and described it as one of his best experiences. “Having hosted my first trip to Zambia & specifically The Lower Zambezi National Park, I can confidently say that this destination has become a highlight of my guiding career.”
The park is known for its wild dog sightings, and Michael’s group had front-row seats to their remarkable hunting skills. Staying at Classic Zambia Camps, they observed a resident wild dog pack famed for hunting large prey, including buffalo!
On their fourth encounter with the pack, Michael had already gained insight into their behavior. But on the fifth and final drive, an incredible scene unfolded.
The night before, reports confirmed the dogs had already made a kill. Rather than being discouraged, Michael saw this as a positive sign—the pack would likely be hunting again in the morning.
That final morning, as Michael and his guests reached the Jeki Plains, they spotted the pack alongside a massive herd of buffalo! Their timing was perfect—the dogs were in hunting mode!
Then, chaos erupted.
The wild dogs gave chase. The panicked buffalo scattered in all directions, and in the confusion, two buffalo calves were separated from their mothers. Sensing an easier target, the dogs ignored the adults and went after the calves.
Michael describes what followed as one of the hardest moments he has witnessed as a professional guide.
“I can say this was one of the toughest sightings I have ever experienced. The same goes for my two guests. The dogs couldn’t finish the buffalo calves off as they normally would with an impala. Even though they were just babies, the dogs struggled to break through their hides.”
“For twenty agonizing minutes, the back-and-forth continued. It was intense, right by the vehicles! The buffalo calves’ cries were absolutely heartbreaking.”
As in previous sightings, the distress calls attracted two male lions. Normally, encountering lions would be bad news for prey. But in this case, it was merciful.
The lions stormed in, scattering the wild dogs. Michael recalls, “It was fascinating to photograph the lions and wild dogs interacting. One lion chased the dogs around it was unbelievable behavior to witness.”
With the calves now in their grasp, the lions ended their suffering in seconds.
Still hungry, the wild dogs split up, some headed into the valley, while a smaller group stayed behind and successfully caught an impala.

Que cena impressionante! A savana sempre nos surpreende com encontros cheios de tensão e instinto selvagem. 🦁🐕🐃
Wild dogs did all the hard work, lion just collected the delivery order 🤣
Thanks to Lions to give peaceful death compared to those devilish dogs
Fortunately pure animals are in shock and feel almost no pain, but indeed big predators kill with suffocation and prey do not suffer pain
Probably more merciful than the slaughterhouses all over the world
This channel captures unbelievable footage…best wildlife channel on YouTube..
TWO lone buff calfs, wild dogs AND lions? Weird…
How many difference to hunting by lions n wild dogs.
At least lions killing first then eats. Wild dogs starts live eating. Its so painfully than killing.
the respect that lions command is unparalleled
