The gemsbok (a large antelope from Africa, Oryx gazella) usually fights to defend territory, compete for females, establish social dominance, and for self-defense. Their fights can be serious and lead to severe injuries or even death, but more often they engage in “display battles” or symbolic fighting until one backs down.
