16:53 the weather service in Texas got cut and there were a bunch of layoffs that happened in 2025 but to be honest, they’ve been underfunded for a while. So there weren’t any workers to give proper weather alerts so they didn’t get any notification at all that this was a possibility as they would’ve in previous years through the weather service. 300 people, many of them children never came home and all in the name of continuous republican budget cuts!! ❤
Ive been in quakes like that first one, and I hate to break it to you but running outside isn't the solution. In fact there isn't one. Its a complete gamble. If you run out you can get crushed by falling masonry. Stay you could get crushed by collapsing building. At the end of the day there is nothing you can do. Its luck of where you are. (also running when the ground is moving all over the place is very difficult. Your like a bean in a shaking can and you get thrown everywhere.)

For example, some apartment buildings have integral fire hoses built into the wall. Some of them just aren't connected to any pipes.
What's wild is that me doomscrolling Hualien earthquake videos inadvertently prepared me for my first earthquake literally a day later. I was watching them the night before thinking "omg this is so wild I hope this never happens to me" next morning I was sheltering in my shaking doorway in the middle of fucking NEW JERSEY

24:40 a couple of years ago there was hail that big or bigger where i live and it sounded like someone was trying to break into our house. Luckily no one eas hurt durring it but it was crazy. There are still sone repairs being done from the damage it caused.

Hail VERY QUICKLY increases in size, sometimes so quickly that it can seem like there was no warning. I live in North Texas and we're the hail capital of the world. If a giant hail core passes over you, especially if the storm is moving fast, once the tiny hail starts you're not going to have time to find shelter before the baseballs start falling. It can be VERY sudden.
Dubai, I believe, tried to make it rain more since it really doesn't and its a popular with tourism. It flooded the whole place and their buildings aren't built to deal with that much water.
Someone from Texas here. We have a lot of crazy weather, mostly tornados, droughts, severe thunderstorms and dust storms. Since infrastructure is the responsibility of the state, we haven't had any updates or funding for it since Reagan took away government funding. We had a big wind storm (downburst) and most of the area was out of power for days to weeks. Pipes always freeze when its a bit below freezing temps. The fix is leaving the water dripping. Texas is also on its own separate power grid too! Fun huh? The Kerr county flood caused death bc the gov refused funding for a flood warning system for quite a few years. It only took 45 minutes of rain for that flood to begin sweeping houses away.

Rumor is that FEMA also had firings happen just before the floods kicked off. (Or after the floods, I've seen people claiming that one too, but I dont really believe that one all that much)
People from Kerrville have flat out said that when they went to sleep that night, they had a 20% chance for rain, then woke back up to historic flooding.
The NWS did send Flash flood Alarms, but they got sent at 4 something in the morning. Most were not awake. Add in July 4th, and a lot of people there for celebrations. And a very inaccurate weather casting (NWS Predicted 3-6 inches of rain, they got something like 10-12 inches in just a few hours)
All of it combined makes for a shitty situation.p

Native Texan here. The freeze didn’t burst my pipes but I was without power for 2 days and it got down to 38 inside my house. Also yes there are a lot of tornadoes in Texas actually. We’re part of tornado alley. We do siren checks once a month lol

They seed the clouds in Canada Alberta to help reduce the chances of vary damaging hail both to property and people
My guess on the hail one, is the 1 yr old got struck right after it started, i.e….no one was body blocking because sky was clear, and then suddenly…it falls, and strikes kid. Thats the only way I can make sense of that.

So…in Florida…if theres a tornado coming your way…youre woken up by emergency broadcast…on your phones. And it is LOUD! Doesnt matter what kind of phone, when that alarm starts, youll know it. This is literally how we get all of our major weather alerts, including hurricane warnings, including tornado warnings IN a hurricane. On every phone. In the areas affected. Theres no reason why Texas didnt have some sort of warning system in place.
Another comment: NOAA's budget was massively cut because the data and what they've drawn from it comes to the conclusion of climate change. Since Trump and his cronies hate the truth, they gutted NOAA and thus its ability to provide timely, accurate warnings
Having a lot of retention ponds where I live because of the '93 floods make a huge difference when it comes to flooding. They're also really great places for native wildlife and even fishing! Not all allow fishing, but none-the-less they're a massive communal benefit
I worked at a ski resort as a lift operator when an avalanche killed a 13 year old kid, we were out there searching for him from around 3PM to around 11PM when he was found wrapped around a tree. Luckily I wasn't in the area they found him so, that's not a memory I'd want to have. I was there when we wound his board, his boots were buckled into his board and his laces were tied tight, his boots were pulled off his feet by the force.

i love nature, and take care of it everyday. gardening is a great hobby. i hate natural disasters. so many casualties and hurt people. its insane how wild natural desasters are.. the whole ground moving and shaking everything, moving anything in its path is devistating
Nah you aren't wrong, we do need more preparation. In truth we need a lot of things fixed, for example here in San Antonio, we had 13 people die while in traffic because of flood waters carrying away their cars, almost a month before the flooding in the hill country. The flooding was blamed on debris covering drainage and some damage to a wall. However instead of looking at what could be fixed or what is needed for weather disasters, they decided to build another Spurs training area, this was before any sort of flooding, but still they could have looked into things.

Cloud-seeding is a real thing, but it has extremely limited applications, but which can still be very useful, especially during droughts or even wildfires and similar purposes (but not for skying stations, that I know of), but it is absolutely incapable of the nefarious and diabolical weather control conspiracy theorists think it can achieve, like creating and controlling hurricanes or causing the massive floods in Texas… You would need some global shift in climate in order to have things like this happening… I dunno what it could be, really beats me. But because of these idiots, we just can't have nice things, and the real life-saving applications of cloud-seeding and other similar technologies won't be developed.
The Texas flooding being so devastating was because the region affected turned down the Biden Administration's adie to build new flood warning systems. On top of that The Trump Administration cut funding to the National Westher Service which directly impacted the alert system and fired hundreds of people who monitor these things. Plus Ted Cruz is on Vacation just like he has been for every disaster that hit Texas.
