Lions, known as the king of the jungle, are animals that live in groups called herds. Territory plays an important role in their lives and battles for territory can be fierce and deadly.
A pride usually consists of several related females, their cubs, and a small number of adult males. Male lions are responsible for protecting the pride’s territory from intruders.
Territorial fights often occur when male lions seek to take over the pride or when they try to expand their territory to access more resources such as prey, water and mating opportunities.
Male lions often form alliances, usually alliances of brothers or close relatives, to increase their strength and chances of successfully taking over the pride. These alliances can consist of two to six individuals.
Territorial fights between male lions can be brutal. Lions use their strong jaws and sharp claws to seriously injure their opponents. Wars can result in serious injuries or even death for one or more combatants.
