The Matterhorn is a majestic and beautiful mountain, drawing in hikers and climbers from all over the world. But its perilous peak has also been the site of many tragedies over the years. In this video, we’ll take a look at 10 of the most fatal climbing disasters to have occurred on the Matterhorn.

First up, we have the #disaster of July 6, 1865, which saw four of the seven members of the first-ever ascent team perish on their way down the mountain. Next, we have the disaster of July 14, 1871, where six of seven members of a second ascent team lost their lives.

One of the most heartbreaking disasters occurred in July of 1882, when a group of seven experienced climbers were caught in a sudden storm and only two survived. The disaster of July 13, 1895 saw seven members of an ascent team die due to a fall, and on July 15, 1900, six members of another team were killed in a similar accident.

Tragedy struck again on July 9, 1911, when seven climbers lost their lives due to a fall, and on July 14, 1930, five members of an ascent team died due to a fall and exposure to the elements.

The disaster of July 16, 1961 saw six climbers lose their lives due to a fall, and the most recent disaster on the Matterhorn occurred on July 12, 1995, when six climbers died in a fall.

These 10 tragic disasters serve as a reminder of the dangers of mountain climbing, and the respect that must be paid to the forces of nature. May these brave souls rest in peace.

  1. The Matterhorn is not the same mountain that it used to be over 100 years ago. The freezing, cold temperatures unfortunately make the rocks become loose and unfortunately when people climb it they end up falling to their death!
It’s a deteriorating dilapidated mountain that should be totally illegal to climb. Take a photo It will last longer!

  2. 57 years ago a brit made summit being first dude ever…
