A natural disaster is an event, with a natural cause, that has catastrophic effects on living things, especially people, in the vicinity. An avalanche that occurs in an uninhabited area is less likely to be called a natural disaster than an avalanche in which houses with people are buried under the avalanche.
Despite the increase in the number of people on Earth, the number of casualties from natural disasters is decreasing. Probably because humanity is better able to protect itself against them through stronger structures, better medical care and the development of warning systems.
