God Of War Knockoff Collection | Movie Tie-In Edition
Spread The Viralist

More God of War knockoffs? Well alright. Welcome back to my ongoing series looking at games that to some degree or another copied God OF War. Now normally I have an intro in these videos explaining what it means to be a God of War Style game, and why they ended up being copied so often, money, and having a simple concept to copy, that’s the answer, and then I discuss the games that inspired God of War itself, Onimusha, ninja gaiden, ICO, etcetera. But I’ve said it a million times in a million ways, and I’ve said all there is to say. And people will still tell me that God of War is a Devil May Cry knockoff without watching the video. So I’m just going to cut the crap and get straight to the video, this is the god of war knockoff collection movie tie-in Edition. This will not be pretty.

  1. One thing i know about Conan and the Hyborian age is that it is the birth of sword and sorcery, and Conan is a lot more introspective, the book itself begins with him already as a king and goes to his past adventures, two curiosities: Conan actually leaves by himself instead of being turned a slave like in the movie(and the movie portrays very well the complexity of the world created by Robert, and i can understand why the change of the beginning), and in some countries outside of the US Conan is public domain, even so that there's french comics of him, they even had problems to bring it to the US having to change the title and so on, but came quite easy to my country.
the makers of the game probably just tough Conan was just a power fantasy story with a over the top barbarian with no conscience.

  2. My dad is a fan of the Conan films with Schwarzenegger. but his games are aggressively average. the films however I hold a nostalgic soft spot and they are good in their own right

also, I feel like you can expand this series beyond Bayonetta clone, maybe just obscure action games in general.

  3. There were mini games in God of War where you were straight up fucking chicks for those red orbs if I remember correctly. No gravitas in that.

I’m sure there are plenty of Conan fans, I loved the books when I was 15-ish and the Dark Horse comics were awesome. Never read the Marvel ones though. It would be amazing to get a Conan game based on The Tower of the Elephant or Red Nails.

  4. To argue the whole Conan being juvenile and wanting games to be taken seriously thing, personally I don't want my gaming to be taken seriously. I never want it to, because it's how we get games like The Last of Us 2, God of War 2018 and Ragnarok (At least, gameplay wise and how it seems to cringe back at the original trilogy. I will argue that Ragnarok's STORY is good, but it's like getting steak instead of Pizza. I wanted pizza, and sure I like steak but this isn't what I wanted even if it's amazing.) Forspoken and Suicide Squad that try to be high art, taken seriously, appeal to the majority of non-gamers and subversive but winds up being cringe and slapped with the "Look guys! We're mature now! Look! We have medals!" just to try and fit in. No, games like Silent Hill 2, the ORIGINAL 2005 Conan, The Witcher 1 and 2 (3 Debatably because while I found the world and quests to be the best, the story I believe was the worst of the trilogy.) and Hellblade and I can count plenty of more were far more mature, fun and engaging than what we get now. It's a bit like appealing to a power fantasy you know? I like 80's slashers and action movies where they lean into the macho-explosion babes boobs and bombs style of movie or game. That's why I liked DMC 5, Robocop Rogue City, and those games that know they're cheesy, that know they're shameless but don't hide it. While, Conan could have been done better, I understood the idea of what they were aiming for. Juvenile, yes, it could have been done better but I won't lie when I say I enjoy that kind of stuff. I also won't lie when I say that my friends and I will laugh our asses off at a fart joke here and there so, again it's all subjective but I believe that there's a niche for that kind of stuff. I mean, you don't get rid of a burger because a baby can't eat it. That's what those kinds of games are to me, even if I don't find it appealing I get why and while it's juvenile for sure my main question is – is it fun or funny? Did you laugh? Then it accomplished what it set out to do. My main issue was with some of the other depictions in the Conan game is how impractical his sword is and the fucking camera not working like it should. Still, I like Conan being niche. It means that we won't have people trying to turn it into a high art franchise where Conan is old with a beard and feels bad about himself. That also isn't to say that the IP has subtle commentary and how plays on how Conan is smarter than he looks. Conan is supposed to be, kind of a wire-y, black long haired, brutish dude who's one weakness is women and is secretly a warrior poet with heaps of buried emotion and depth. Something the Schwarzenegger movie got… kind of right. Still, I won't argue that it undeniably nails the tone of Conan and I would like to believe R.E. Howard would have given it a seal of approval. The MMO is fairly good to get you into the world of Conan, track down the 2005 game (AKA The Dark Axe), and read the books and pretty much anything by Dark Horse.

  5. 1:04:40 Look, if you no longer cover licensed games after this video ALL because of The Last Airbender tie-in game broke you, then you are going to lose me as a subscriber, I don’t care about the modern Sony stuff like Uncharted, TLOU, or even Insomniac’s Spider-Man, I don’t even have interest today’s current original game trends, especially since the “AAA” gaming experiences have been very bad, and the only great gaming experiences I have any interest in are the Nintendo games, especially Mario, licensed games are another source of gaming entertainment that I do get fun out of.

  6. I never had a PlayStation growing up. I've always had a wii and I actually played Avatar. The last airbender, the game and I thought it was a very good game. But now I have A PlayStation 5, so I am a PlayStation person. Now and for you ask yes, I've had a PlayStation.Three and a playstation four I didn't skip straight to a five

  7. Fan of Conan, the series is how can I explain it?? Conan is more than just the movies, we have the 1930's books, the 1960's-90's comics, The 80's movies, of course the countless games, both pre 2007 Conan and after, the reboot movie that went no where ete.

  8. Hmm, I would call myself a fan but I don't seek Conan media out but I do like him as a character and his stories. Haven't consumed the most Conan media but I usually enjoyed what I've experienced with the movies, comics, and pulp novels. Never played any of the games, though I wasn't aware of most of them either.

While it's been forever since I watched it I remember the Hercules live action show in the 90s with the Xena Warrior Princess spin-off growing up as a kid. Obviously those took some inspiration from Conan even though Hercules as a character did come way before, it wasn't exactly faithful to the myth we know and was more episodic in nature, similar to the old serial shows and stories, like Conan. So when I found out about Conan later it was just more of what I liked already.

Idk I've always liked the serialized format for a hero where it's not necessarily just about some grand endgame but rather an adventurer going from one quest/mission to the next with no connection between the situations. It just makes sense that theres completely separate problems and conflicts in the world that a hero might run into on their travels.
