People always feel a need to anthropomorphize their pets. A dog that has a "sad" look on its face is only sad because humans believe the animal is sad. A "smiling" dog likely means the dog is just calm, relaxed, or content. A wagging tail would show a happy dog more than anything else would.

What a sad face, and story too. I can't imagine what a dog goes through who has to be surrendered from the person they knew into a strange and scary world. But to see the scared/sad face transformed by humans who can bring back that happiness is amazing. Thank you.
