A tornado swept through Fort Lauderdale in Florida, USA on Saturday, January 6, 2023, damaging boats and causing power lines to collapse. According to the National Weather Service office in Miami, authorities received several phone calls and social media messages about the tornado near the Federal Highway at approximately 5:50 PM local time. The NWS issued a tornado warning about 5 minutes before reports of the tornado.
According to the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Service, the tornado formed over land and touched down west of Las Olas and the Intracoastal Waterway, quickly moving eastward until reaching the ocean, no longer affecting land or the coastline. The storm damaged power lines and marine vessels in the area. Several eyewitnesses posted videos on social media showing the tornado moving over water and Fort Lauderdale Beach, captured from different angles on their mobile phones.
It is expected that on Sunday, January 7, a team from the NWS will survey the damage to determine the tornado’s strength and path. The Mayor of Fort Lauderdale stated that utility services are working on restoring power to the region, while debris cleanup is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.
Local residents described the ordeal lasting about 30 seconds, during which parts of houses were scattered along driveways. A woman, whose home was affected by the tornado, described the situation: “The house started shaking. Everything was flying everywhere. Part of our furniture ended up a couple of houses down.”
Additionally, on Saturday, there were several reports of severe weather conditions in the Sunshine State, including funnel clouds, waterspouts, and destructive wind gusts. The strongest storm wind gust recorded in the Pine Island area reached 52 miles per hour.
