When the police first visited the farm in Chester, Pennsylvania, they did not know that cows lived there, and certainly did not expect that they would be found drowning in their own manure. They investigated the case of the horse after a man reported it after seeing its body, apparently lifeless, lying on the grass. The officers were very surprised to see that the horse was still alive, just sleeping, but decided to conduct a further check together with animal protection organizations, the Society for the Protection of Large Animals (LAPS) and Helping Hands for Animals. Authorities learned that the owner of the farm had 15 cows, many of which he exhibited at state fairs.
