The Once In A Generation Tornado – Joplin 2011 F5 Documentary
The 2011 Joplin tornado was a large and devastating multiple-vortex tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri, United States, on the evening of Sunday, May 22, 2011. Part of a larger late-May tornado outbreak, the EF5 tornado began just west of Joplin and intensified very quickly, reaching a maximum width of nearly one mile (1.6 km) during its path through the southern part of the city. The tornado tracked eastward through Joplin, and then continued across Interstate 44 into rural portions of Jasper and Newton counties, weakening before it dissipated.

The tornado devastated a large portion of the city of Joplin, damaging nearly 8,000 buildings, and of those, destroying over 4,000. The damage, which included major facilities like one of Joplin’s two hospitals as well as much of its basic infrastructure, amounted to a total of $2.8 billion, making the Joplin tornado the costliest single tornado in U.S. history. The insurance payout was the highest in Missouri history, with the previous record of $2 billion being the hail storm of April 10, 2001.

Overall, the tornado killed 158 people (with an additional eight indirect deaths) and injured some 1,150 others. It ranks as one of the United States’ deadliest tornadoes: it was the deadliest U.S. tornado since the April 9, 1947, F5 tornado in Woodward, Oklahoma, and the seventh-deadliest in U.S. history. It was the deadliest tornado in Missouri history, as well as the first single tornado since the 1953 Flint–Beecher tornado in Michigan to cause more than 100 fatalities. It was the first F5/EF5 tornado to occur in Missouri since May 20, 1957, when an F5 tornado destroyed several suburbs of Kansas City, and only the second F5/EF5 tornado in Missouri since 1950. It was the third tornado to strike Joplin since May 1971.

  1. If you survived this Tornado, please tell us your story!
While we aim to be as accurate as possible, the 2011 Joplin Tornado was a heavily rain wrapped tornado, and there were not many video's because of that.
Some sections have been replaced with a visual reference in that case.

Background music was added behind clips that included no audio, otherwise the rest of the clips are the original raw audio.

  2. I am a historical meteorologist. I look at tornadoes and nor’easters primarily. I was in highschool when Joplin happened and it was because of this storm that I went into my field. Looking back on what happened is drvistating and fascinating at the same time. And this storm has helped make advancements in safety already. May the victims Rest In Peace and may the survivors find peace.

  3. I was living in Las Vegas at the time, I happened to be traveling back from Long Island (recovering with family after back surgery. This was feb, stopped to get gas in Joplin and my truck ended up getting stuck in snow. I kid you not 4 people jumped out of their cars to help me instantly. I passed through Joplin again 2 weeks prior to the tornado when I decided to move back to NY

  4. I know this is tornado alley, but I’m shocked so many people were confident enough to stand above ground and/or outside and film these tornados for so long. Terrifying. I love to catch stuff on film too but this shit scares me and I would be getting to the basement

  5. Joplin was BAD. This tornado was a powerful EF5 that struck on May 22nd, 2011. This tornado did over $2.8 Billion in damages, (today is now $3.64 Billion with inflation,) & killed 161 people directly plus another 8 indirectly who didn't make it in the hospital. This tornado was extremely deadly. The reason being it was entirely rain wrapped & looked like a wall of rain instead of tornado. It was so well hidden, that the news media had no clue it was even there until it was over halfway through the city of Joplin MO. I remember this tornado & do sometimes go back in time to revisit the events that unfolded as it happened. Joplin still is the most deadly modern tornado since 1974 when it comes to lives lost in 2023. This is one of the few tornadoes that have to this day scared me as a chaser. This storm was different on a whole other level, & now when I hear the name Joplin to this day, I instantly remember that tornado every time.
The footage at 20:3025:40 is authentic from the Joplin tornado. While you cannot see it coming visually, notice how dark & louder (notice how it sounds like jet engine,) it gets as it approaches. That family took a near miss & the father did excellent keeping everyone calm as it was hitting the house with debris. They are lucky to be alive.

  6. Whoa that's BAD!!… Usually it's one of those things where a couple houses are flat a couple houses nearby have some damage and everybody else's house is fine.
This looks like the aftermath of a bombing! EVERYTHING is flat, Except the flag, God bless whoever Did that.

  7. Mayfield Kentucky tornado did way more catastrophic damage than the Joplin tornado but it was only rated a EF-4 the National Weather Service has gotten way more stricter on rating tornadoes. The EF rating scale truly sucks to me.
