The Black-footed Ferret is a species of ferret native to North America and is one of the most endangered mammals in the world. They are solitary hunters and feed mainly on prairie dogs. They were once widespread in the Great Plains but their populations declined due to habitat loss and disease. In the 1980s, only a handful of individuals were found and they were declared endangered. Conservation efforts, including captive breeding programs, have helped increase their numbers but they are still considered critically endangered with only a few hundred individuals remaining in the wild.

At one time when I was in elementary school these animals were considered extinct.

Black-footed ferrets were thought to be extinct at one point, but a single population was found in the wild a few years after that. Since then, humans have been able to reintroduce them back into the wild with the help of a captive breeding program.
Fun Fact!
In 2020, the first ever black footed ferret clone was born! She was cloned using the frozen cells of a ferret that had died in the 1980s. Scientists are hoping that she can introduce some much-needed genetic variation back into the population.
