Although some are minor and less damaging, some disasters have left humans suffering and recovering for years. 10. Haiti Earthquake of 2010.
Looking at the contemporary timeline, the Haiti earthquake of 2010 has left us shivering. The deadly earthquake in the city of North America had a magnitude of 7.0, which is probably the strongest earthquake that has struck the earth.
9. Hurricane Katrina of 2005.
Going back 5 years from 2010, we have Hurricane Katrina, the 6th strongest typhoon that has ever struck the United States. It caused the death of hundreds of people, and the infrastructure was damaged a lot as well. The superstorm was so disastrous that it got a category three scale on the Hurricane scale.
8. Hurricane Andrew of 1993.
Next to Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Andrew was the 5th most catastrophic storm in the United States. The form accumulated from a tropical wave on 16th august 1993 but gained strength on August 2022 when it curved towards the west.
7. Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami.
This catastrophe struck japan in 2011 when the citizens were overtaken by both an earthquake and a tsunami together. The earthquake had a magnitude of 9.0, which was the most strengthful earthquake recorded in the history of japan. It destroyed thousands of houses and shattered buildings. Millions of citizens died, and some were left injured or missing. The destruction even triggered a nuclear disaster but failed; however, it successfully awakened the Tsunami from the ocean. The recorded wave height was 23.6 meters.
6. Tsunami of 2011.
On December 26, 2004, a powerful tsunami was triggered by strong earth with a magnitude of 9.0. It caused severe damage to the 14 countries lined up with the Indian ocean killing 225,000 – 275,000 people. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand were the most affected countries. The height of the waves was the tallest recorded in the earth’s history.
5. Tangshan Earthquake.
Otherwise known as the Great Tangshan Earthquake, the Tangshan earthquake occurred in China on July 22, 1976. The magnitude was 7.6 meters and shook Tangshan, the industrial city of japan. Two hundred forty-two thousand persons lost their lives, the highest death tally recorded.
4. Cyclone Nargis.
Cyclone Nargis became the biggest tragedy in the fate of Myanmar after it struck it on May 2, 2008. It took around 140,000 lives and swept the population around the Irrawaddy River delta of Myanmar. It is positioned after Typhoon Nina of 1995 as the worst cyclone globally. The estimated damage was $10 billion.
3. 2008 Earthquake of China.
China trembled in 2008 after a deadly earthquake in the Sichuan province, which caused the loss of 87,000 lives. Millions of them were left abandoned and homeless. The citizens’ died tragically as their bodies were crushed under stones and rubles. Huge factories and commercial buildings were demolished in the blink of an eye. It took rescue teams a lot of time to reach the site due to the massive blockage the earthquake had caused.
2. 2003 Iran Earthquake.
Calculating around 7.6 magnitudes, yet another deadly earth quake took place. The southeastern part of Iran was deeply affected, with the city of Bam being the main target and the nearby areas of Kerman becoming the focal point. Although it was not as strong as other earthquakes stated above yet took 26000 lives and left 30,000 injured badly.
Pakistan earthquake of 2005.
Lastly, Pakistan also faced a disastrous earthquake in 2005. It mainly affected Kashmir and Northwestern parts of Pakistan; however, the neighboring countries such as Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and China also felt some of it. An estimated amount of 83000 people lost their lives in Pakistan, whereas 1400 people died in the Indian occupied Kashmir.
