Wild animals bring many awe-inspiring physical traits to their battle for survival,
including the ability to use their teeth and jaws for self-defense and feeding.
Not surprisingly, nature’s strongest jaws often belong to apex predators who sit comfortably atop the food chain,
and collecting hard data on the force of their bites can be a decidedly risky proposition.
Researchers have used a number of methods, to estimate the forces at work in nature’s bite club.
Expressed as PSI (pound-force per square inch), here’s how some of the strongest jaws in the wild stack up.
We hope you enjoyed it 🙏

  1. A 2012 Study from Dr. Hartman-Rose from the American Association of Anatomy has some data regarding Cat Bite Forces:

    Bodyweight-Species-Canine-P3-Carnassial notch

    17kg-Caracal-171-189-222psi

    14kg-Serval-150-170-200psi

    12kg-Ocelot-161-184-224psi

    15kg-Bobcat-113-130-155psi

    24kg-Clouded Leopard-240-293-355psi

    100kg-Jaguar-1108-1335-1553psi

    34kg-Leopard-366-420-499psi

    38kg-Snow Leopard-327-379-452psi

    200kg-Tiger-1548-1790-2002psi

Unfortunately, no Lion example has been found. But no worries, Lion fans! This study is also based on BFQ's (Bite Force Quotients). Since we know the Lion's score (112) compared to a Tiger (127). I can make an estimation of the Lion's results based on the Tiger.

    Here's the Lion results:

    Bodyweight-Species-Canine-P3-Carnassial notch

    200kg-Lion (psi)-1367-1581-1768psi

No.4 Great White Shark: 4,000 PSI (Debatable)

    No.5 Saltwater Crocodile: 3,700 PSI

    No.6 American Alligator: 2,125 PSI

    No.7 Hippopotamus: 1,825-2,000 PSI

    No.8 Jaguar: 1,500 PSI

    No.9 Gorilla: 1,300 PSI

    No.10 Polar Bear: 1,235 PSI

    No.11 Grizzly Bear: 975-1,160 PSI

    No.12 Spotted Hyena:
    1,100 PSI

    No.13 Tiger: 1,050 PSI

  3. Pound for pound the strongest wild animal bite force on earth is the IRS.

Orcas have crushing Bite Forces up to 19,000 PSI, which is like 4X stronger than the #1 Crocodiles listed here and even more than the first 9 animals all combined together.
