You know society as a whole is losing it's sense of honor when significant numbers of people driving decent cars and decently dressed are stealing the belongings of others without even knowing what those belongings are. That major lack of respect for others, the law, and even themselves is just the foundation of their behavior, though. The actual driving forces are a pathological desire to return to childhood's carefree terms, a protest against knowing they can't return, fear of responsibility, anger at social norms, jealousy of people who are happily established, anger at authority, masochistic self-loathing, addiction to material things and to compulsively reaching for more, and above all a deep emptiness that they've become desperately consumed with trying to fill without having to go through any long, painful healing process.
