The Banzai Pipeline Slide Disaster | The Death Of Quimby Ghilotti

Spread The Viralist

On the 2nd of June 1997, a long, fun day at Concord Waterpark was coming to an end for the seniors of Napa High School when a group of them decided they were going to uphold the school tradition of what was known as “clogging” before they left. The idea involved clogging the Banzai Pipeline water slide, causing a massive pile up before shooting into the waters below together. Little did they know, what was to come would be anything but a joyous memory, more of a nightmare that continues to haunt many of them to this day. This is the horrific story of the Concord waterslide disaster.

  1. Very tragic story, however totally preventable ! You said it perfectly, while it may have been their fault they didn’t deserve that outcome. We’ve all done some stupid shit in our lives that could’ve landed us in some very bad situations! I know I have ♥️

  2. They shouldn’t have had to pay a dime. Sometimes kids are dumb and we have to remember back when we was kids you think you’re invincible and won’t die till your old and grey. Those kids made a poor choice for a what they thought was a good idea, anywho the blame is on the kids that chose to do what they did, not the park.

  3. I have only one ghost story. I live fairly close to here and my ex and I had season passes to Six Flags + Hurricane Harbor, these water slides.
Idk about now but ten years ago that wooden tower was still there, the same tower from 97’. We were older so we had a habit of staying until we were the last in the park. Behind that tower is a long chain link fence with huge warehouses on the other side. It was around 6:00pm so they were definitely closed. As we were taking our last few rides down this slide I kept hearing some girls cry echoing from the warehouse walls! I couldn’t explain it!
On the way home my ex told me about the tragedy that happened and we looked it up for hours.
Unknowingly I heard that girl crying at the end of our day on that slide. Someday I’ll go back and see if it happens again.
    My only ghost story.

  4. This happened my 8th grade year. OUr class was supposed to have our 8th grade picnic there and couldn't because of this group. This park had only been open really for 3 years when this happened. All my class were pissed because we had to have our picnic somewhere much lamer. This class was so f-ing stupid! Hope they all got their karma served. This was a major case NOT of park irresponsibility but user irresponsibility. I have no sympathy for the students. Consequences of stupidity and ridiculous "non-traditions." A year later I met some kids from Napa High, our school ran track against them, and they were equally pissed because all the rest of them after that class got nothing for their senior years and they told us that clogging the slide was not a tradition, it was bullsh!t. Many people got punished for their dumbassary.
Also, 2 years later I worked at this water park. There is nothing special about it really. People do not come from around the country to visit it. It is just like every other water park out there.

  5. Why was there not proper monitoring of people going on and making sure they were going the whole way or at least a certain point before then next person was allowed to go down?? Don't see how you can say none of this was the park's fault. If there was a load capacity then there should have been a practice in place to make sure it wasn't exceeded…..duh

  6. WHY was there not a worker helping board people ONTO the slide and counting the numbers as well.
The damn slide split completely and was not built with strong enough material. It looked like plastic to me.
I'd say it was the parks fault for not maintaining the ''count'' of people taking the ride, and $1.7 million for that young girl's death was not adequate. It should have been at least $5 million for her, and $3-million for the rest of the teens.

  7. Only in the US will you see this shit happen. Parents suing someone over their own children's stupidity. That being said they didn't deserve this, but their families didn't deserve that money either

  8. Now you know why the world is in the state it is. No one takes responsibility for what they do, and they sue everyone else. And it’s settled just to shut them up so they are vindicated. Now the world is governed by people like this. The ‘Not my fault’ people. We are doomed

  9. This happens at every pool with a slide…
It still surprises me to this day that never ever do schools or pools think about telling why some rules are in place.
If you get told as a child don't do that or you fall 30m to your dead on plain concrete, this would never happen again.
In the end the pool has the blame because they did to less to prevent the children from doing what they did.

  10. Kids can’t comprehend the obvious dangers in doing something like this, yet people want even younger children to be able to decide to permanently alter their bodies with surgery and drugs because the child thinks that they are a different gender then they actually are. Make that make sense. While I feel sorry for the families, the water park, ride designer, and school officials were not at fault. The kids were being stupid and paid the price.

  11. It’s sad that the last one down was the one that died. It’s surprising because you would think she would have landed on top of other students and not hit her head on the concrete

  12. Imagine your children behaving line hooligans and then blaming the water park. Shame on all the parents who sued.
